So, whilst it's fun watching reviews of the 10900 vs the 3900X back in the realms of reality for people who don't want to spend £500+ on a CPU ......


Does it make more sense to spend~£150-200 on a Ryzen 3600/3600X or one of the Intel equivalents for a mixture of gaming and productivity?

Ryzen for a mix of both.
 
It depends on the type of games you are playing - some of the older games probably will be better on Intel,but anything newer is probably very similar.

The 3600, but it probably makes sense to wait for B550 at this point. They look like a hefty upgrade over B450, no chipset fan and no complications when upgrading to Zen 3 later.

Would probably be quite a hefty price upgrade too with the additional features.

There's really not that much wiggle room for them to increase it from what you see B450 boards going for now before you hit X570 pricing. A decent B450 board is already going to run you £100+ right now. The Tomhawk MAX, by far the most commonly-recommended board, is £110. X570 boards start at £150, though you'd probably want to spend ~£180 on something like the Asus TUF Gaming to get a board actually worth owning. Still not a huge range for them to work with.

I think you will be looking at £120 to around £220 for the b550 range with A520 essentially replacing the b450 price range of £70-120.

Not unless they've completely lost their minds. £220 is mid-range X570 pricing. Why on earth would anybody buy a B550 board at £200+ over an X570 one?

/edit/ It's also pretty important to remember that the B550 chipset isn't dealing with PCIe 4.0, which is what's driving up the prices on X570 and Z490. The only 4.0 functionality will be directly from the CPU, which means only the first PCIe slot and one NVMe slot, so no need for the complex routing and signal boosting required for getting 4.0 lanes to slots physically further from the CPU socket. There's no justification for jacking up the price on B550.
 
It's like tumble weed for anything Intel related at the moment. No one gets excited for any thing Intel any more.

New CPU's launch and we are still on page one of the thread. :p

You will be paying for the beefy VRM and extra features over B450 and I could definetly see some of the Itx boards going for around £220.

That is failure of a price,as the X570 mini-ITX motherboards were already that price,and the B450 mini-ITX motherboards were overpriced for a long-time!

There isn't really anything to get excited about though really.

Same architecture as previous 4 releases, same node, 2 extra cores at the top end, the rest are just re-brands from last years chips. Run hotter, consume more power, still riddled with security flaws.

It won't be until they actually release their new architecture and new node will there actually be anything to look forward to from Intel
