Do OcUK provided de-lidded cpu's with there bundles?
I have a 4770k from a "Rock Creek Gold Rush Intel i7 4770K @ 4.4GHz Overclocked Haswell Gaming PC Bundle"

i have just added the cpu to my water loop and when i went to delid it the IHS basically fell off, and looks to have had liquid metal on it.

They used to sell 4770k bundles where the CPU was delidded and guaranteed a minimum clock speed. Iirc 4.6ghz being pretty much the standard. Pretty sought after chips theese, many were capable of 5ghz on low voltage. Quite rare for a 4770k.

I miss the days of just buying hardware to see how much you could get out of it and how high a benchmark score you could get be it 3Dmark 2001 or what have you, but finances and priorities change as you get older. oh to be in my twenties again :)

Intel ruined CPU overclocking by "removing" the FSB and changing the name to the BCLK which is probably locked during manufacturing to take the fun out of it but hey ho it looks like BCLK overclocking will be coming soon so maybe i'll upgrade in a few years lol

Check clearance. There is some chips in there which have been speed binned by 8pack. Mpst are capable of 5ghz on water and not sure if they have been delidded but if not its extremely easy to do with the vice method. YouTube the correct vice method. Not the hammer and vice just the vice on its own with something cusioning the chip inside the vice.

Skylake has been out for months and supports BCLK overclocking :p

Possible it's been used by OCUK / 8 Pack to see if it was a magic 5ghz chip and it wasn't so they then sold it with a bundle?

You're not alone there! Remember the days of joining the L1 bridges with a pencil on socket A Athlon/Duron chips to unlock the multiplier?

Cannot believe I had forgotten the pencil trick. Wasn't it still happening with Thunderbird?

Fond memories again...
