I don't understand this laptop. I thought the whole point of Trinity APU was that it gave mediocre CPU performance and mediocre GPU performance in a cheap way. What would be the sense in pairing this up with a powerful graphics card? Why would they not put an Ivybridge i5/i7 in this?

Because high-resolution and high detail graphics performance is not CPU reliant, but relies on GPU power.

This machine is quicker than the Intel Ivybridge I7 7970M based laptops as it does not suffer the Enduro utilisation issue. Obviously when AMD fix that issue the Intel models should be a bit quicker, but it won't be huge because at True HD resolution at maximum quality settings in game, its down to your GPU performance, not the CPU.

I think CPU makes more difference than you think...

http://www.anandtech.com/show/6347/amd-a10-5800k-a8-5600k-review-trinity-on-the-desktop-part-2/6

The numbers are from the desktop Trinity parts, but the principle should still apply, fast GPU paired with fast CPU is a lot faster than a mediocre CPU.

46% increase in Metro, 84% increase in DIRT 3, 50% increase in Crysis aren't slight!

Those benchmarks are at 1024x768 on not very powerful graphics. As such CPU is still very reliant in such test.

CPU makes a difference, but at 1920x1080, with AA/AF, maximum settings, the GPU has the biggest impact of all. :)

Hi there

OK a lot of people have suggested that laptops using the AMD A10-4600M don't possess enough CPU horsepower to play the latest games, I've argued that at True HD resolution (1920x1080) with maximum detail settings. The FPS is far more dependent on the GPU rather than the CPU, yes a CPU will help make things faster still, but in game at such resolutions it is the GPU which matters most.

So I did a simple Heaven Benchmark on the two following laptops which we sell:-

As you can see the Intel based laptop is more than double the price, but it does sport one of Intel's latest Quad Core processors and NVIDIA's flagship 4GB GTX 680M.

So surely a laptop at half its price based on AMD's new platform has no chance featuring the A10-4600M APU and ATI 7970M graphics?

laptopcompare.jpg

Its irrelevent to myself or OcUK which you buy, as we sell them both, yes the more expensive unit is larger and has more features, but its really not much better at gaming if any at all.

So there you have it, the new AMD platform really is a superb option on mobile computing whether your a hardcore gamer, the new platform can handle it. :)

No.
I certainly wouldn't pay the extra 1000 for the 680M and Intel.
But at the same time I wouldn't put down 1000 pound for a Trinity.

Why not?

So you'd rather say get a 660M laptop with I7 3630QM or an older GTX 570M based laptop which will all get a severe ass kicking by the all AMD laptop with 7970M in games.

I think a lof of you are under-estimating the power of AMD. :)

As such were arranging to get a few of the GX60's sent of for review purposes at review sites used to testing these kind of things in games, as thats our issue we don't have games here to test with, only synthetic benchmarks which show that the 7970M is very close to the 680M in graphics performance.

Also bear in mind these new AMD laptops are using the new Piledriver cores, which are more efficient than previous Bulldozer design.

thats what i was trying to say, intel vs amd cpu,i wasnt compairing the laptops.

Amd trinity that bad then?

Nope its bloody superb actually, people are just bad mouthing something they've not even tried.

Tell you guys what, name me one game that is more CPU intensive that has a built in benchmark and I shall run it on these two laptops. JUST ONE GAME though and it shall be done, then you will see how good this AMD setup really this. :)

Borderlands 2 is CPU intensive, alas I'm not sure if it has a benchmark feature.

Need a game that is benchmarkable easily out of the box, no hacks or mods, just an easy to run benchmark to compare the two laptops in-game performance in a game that also gives the CPU a working out. :)

I think most of are saying that we would rather buy a £1000 laptop with the lowest grade i5 Ivy Bridge in it powering the 7970m, than have the AMD powering it, which is still a weaker CPU no matter what you say. There are many professional reviews that back that up using a wide variety of CPU tests.

I think you are underestimating the knowledge of the OCUK memberbase and the sheer amount of research we do into new hardware. We have probably all read most of the professional reviews and we thus have a very good idea how they compare to Intel CPU's. While im sure you know more than the average guy Gibbo as you come into contact with so much hardware, I imagine you do a fair bit less less research and tinkering around than most of us guys do in our spare time. :)

My point is though.

1k buys you a 660M I5 based laptop.
1k buys you a 7970M Trinity based laptop.

If in actual gaming performance at the laptops native resolution (1920x1080) the AMD system in all games is faster which it shall be as even in the most CPU intensive games, the 7970M will still push it ahead.

Why buy the 660M based I5 gaming laptop, when your games would be running slower than the AMD Trinity based 7970M laptop?

This is my point, yes I know an I5 processor is quicker than an AMD Trinity, but games are far more reliant on the GPU at 1920x1080 rather than the CPU, including the more CPU intensive games. As such AMD Trinity laptop with 7970M offers the better gaming experience at the £1000 price point and in some games can match much more expensive rivals.

This is my point. :)

When AMD solve the Enduro issue, then of course the best solution will be an OcUK built laptop with an I5/I7 with a 7970M. But whilst the Enduro issue is still a problem the actual AMD Trinity 7970M laptop is faster than our own OcUK 7970M based laptop with I7-3820QM, this is a fact.

But lets see how the game benchmarks fair, Shogun 2 is downloading, hope to get done tomorrow.

Gibbo waiting for benchmarks before i buy, what time does offer end ? because if price goes up then its a no deal.:(

Hi there

Only ran Shogun 2 so far on the AMD, it got:-

DX11 1080P @ 48fps
DX11 720P @ 70fps
DX9 CPU @ 13fps

Sleeping Dogs results:-

photoamd.jpg

photoamd1.jpg

Shall run Shogun 2 & Sleeping Dogs on the GTX 680M later and post the results. :)

like i said tell me somthing i don't already know, that's why i asked what time offer finishes not what day .maybe you should read peoples previous posts before making statements .

Hi there

Sorry for not coming back earlier, if you want one, we can honour the deal price. :)

Any luck with the GTX 680M results yet?

Yes!

They prove exactly what I've being saying all along. At 1080p its down to GPU performance and as such even in Shogun 2 this AMD based laptop is nearly as quick as the Intel 680M based laptop costing twice as much.

Of course at lower resolutions, the more powerful Intel CPU shows its muscle, but I stand by my original point, on a gaming 1080p laptop you game at 1080p as the GPU is powerful enough. Here is the Shogun 2 results:-

shogunbench.jpg

Shall post Sleeping Dogs results later or tomorrow in a nice a chart. :)

My point all along has being that 1080p gaming is far more reliant on GPU, and this does indeed seem the trait, as now proven in Heaven and Shogun 2. Fact is at 1080p gaming the CPU does very little, its mostly down to GPU performance. If playing at lower resolutions, then of course the CPU aids performance quite a bit.

Fact is for 1k you won't get a faster 1080p gaming laptop on the Intel/NVIDIA side. The AMD CPU is slower for sure, but it does not spoil your 1080p gaming experience.

Of course soon AMD will release the Enduro Hotfix so then those of you insistent on having Intel will be able to have the best of both worlds, an Intel based laptop with 7970M which is cheaper and a match for the more expensive 680M. :)

Truth is right now if you want an Intel gaming laptop for 1k, the best GPU you will get is a 660M/570M which simply won't offer the same performance in games at 1080p, not even close to this all AMD Laptop.

Hi there

Here is the Sleeping Dogs results, the 7970M is on top when visual settings are all set to extreme, which enables AA/AF I believe. However setting to normal so AA/AF is not on the 680M platform seems to have a big performance pull back, beating the 7970M, maybe thats the faster processor flexing its muscle?

sleepnormal.jpg

sleepextreme.jpg

We sell both laptops so I have no personal gain by saying buy the cheaper one, but I've run the benchmarks requested and pretty much proven my point, the 7970M AMD based laptop offers superb 1080p gaming performance, if thats your aim your not gonna find a better gaming laptop for the money. If the 680M Intel laptop was £200 more, then I'd consider it, but even if you remove the SSD, larger screen, bluray, your still talking an additional £500. I'd simply not spend it.

Of course the best option all round shall be when AMD release the hotfix for Enduro problem, then you can have full blown 7970M performance with Intel processor.

But please those saying that AMD Trinity is a bad match with 7970M is miss-leading, its just as capable in games at 1080p as the more powerful Intel based counterparts which cost considerably more. :)

Can you run the benchmarks on that Ivy i5 7970M with the enduro fix and compare?
Which, I want, so badly :p
I only have 820 =/.

Shall do, but won't be posted until late next week, were so busy its untrue and were moving.

But I shall get it done, with the Hotfix our own laptops will be the quickest things out there as 7970M in my oppinion is the best gaming mobile graphics out there. :)
