OCUK Forums IPv6 Support

I'm all for IPv6, but imagine the huge increase in troubleshooting if BT "switched on" IPv6 for its millions of customers? It's an incredibly difficult problem to solve, there is just so much inertia behind IPv4, which still works just fine. And yes, things like Carrier-Grade NAT are expensive and a horrible kludge, but they also solve the problem in the least breaky way (for now).

I am a nerd of a very high order, and even I would hesitate to go IPv6 at home, especially considering the wife acceptance factor.

We're just beginning the process of rolling out IPv6 internally across our company, this project is projected to take over 6 months to roll out (approximately 40,000 devices).

The implementation part is a tiny part of that project, the majority of it is planning, testing & validation of all types of devices & there's a large team of people involved in this (which cost's a fair amount)

I can only imagine what ISP/carriers would need to do to implement IPv6 on their networks.

On a similar setup but about quarter of the size, I think the most difficult part is going to be training our IT department. Adding it into our future plan went down like a bomb shell and it was very clear there were a lot of misconceptions regarding how it works.

The hosting company I work for has already taken part in the IPv6 events takening place online.

However passing that to the END customer and onto us home users is a hugely more difficult thing to do.

Sure its simple to apply the config to a router, but IP space tracking configuration documentation monitoring applications billing systems etc etc all have to be updated to be IPv6 compliant. Management and support of IPv6 is the hard thing.

There are a couple out there that do offer ipv6 with their xDSL connections.

Was most posting from the perspective that (we have several connections here due to people working from home, etc.) none of my existing connections even have IPv6 supported by the ISP that includes a dedicated business ISP that offers all kind of high end "professional" feature extras.
