Hi all,

Looking for a gaming htpc and noticed the below listing on the OC website.

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/ocuk...-gaming-pc-intel-core-i7-6700k-fs-18q-og.html

Looks like a really decent spec for its size which I can tuck away in my cupboard.

Just wondering what people's opinions are on it.

Depending on the mobo I think it could benefit from an m.2 drive to boot my OS from. Also I can only assume it's a founders edition 1080 they're including, do you think it's best to have blower cooling or fan style in this case?

Looking for options before I start to tweak the spec a little.

Thanks

Hey,

I personally really like these living room systems, I've recently started using mine a lot more purely because its much more comfortable gaming from my big comfy couch than on my office chair.

The motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-Z170N-WIFI and does support and M.2 drive so but with it not being an option if you did want one you would just need to give us a call or post on the customer service thread when you've made your order.

Graphics card wise there's an MSI 1080 aero in there but again if you did want to change the GPU do the same as I mentioned about the SSD but I think the MSI aero would be fine in the fractal case.

Thanks for coming back to me.

I agree, comfort wise, it's definitely the way forward especially if you have a decent screen and surround sound system in the living room.

On that note, I need to understand if GPU will output sound via HDMI. The reason I ask is that I'll be routing it through my home cinema amp and would like to bitstream the audio in order to use the audio codecs within the amp.

As for the SSD, this is a must as I'd plan on running KODI on it and want fast boot speeds and a snappy menu for htpc duties.

Where are vents found on the fractal case? The reason I ask is that the GPU might be better cooled if it can suck fresh air into the case.

Exactly, I just need the better TV and sound system :p

It will indeed I do the same with my current TV with it being connected via HDMI.

Sure thing, the default drive is a 2.5" Kingston so just give us a call when you want to make the customisation.

If you follow that link above it'll take you to the direct page for the case itself, all the images are pretty clear as to where the vents are so there should be plenty of airflow and infact the section where the graphics card sits is completely ventilated.

Is there much difference between the MSI Aero and founders edition 1080?

Also, would it be worth adding an M.2 drive to this or is it overkill, rig is mainly for gaming.

There's a slight difference in the clock speed where the OCuK FE has a boost clock of 1733MHz and the Aero has 1771MHz.

Adding an M.2 would improve boot times and load times for any applications stored on it so in that respect yes it would be worth it but there is an extra cost to having one of these drives, so really it's up to you if you want to pay for the faster speeds.

Thanks for your reply, do you know what price difference for changing the ssd to an M.2 leaving the hybrid storage as it is?

Thanks.

It depends on which capacity and model of M.2 you go with, if you have a look through the range of M.2 drives and give the customer service team a call they can price up the system with the changes and let you know what the total cost would be :)

OK will do, thanks for your help.

When you say "tuck in your cupboard", what exactly do you mean by that?

High power systems need airflow. You need them to be in an area where they have access to fresh cool air for intake and can exhaust their hot air without that air getting trapped in an enclosed space. If you're going to put your PC in something, at most I would go with an entertainment center where you just have shelves that have an open front and open back to let the machine breathe.

If you put a machine like that in a cupboard with a closed back (or even worse, a door closed at the front) you are going to have a very bad time.

I have noticed this, have just recently purchased one of these, it does overheat, the GPU gets very hot and some games the machine just shuts down, I have managed to limit this by using Vertical Sync on certain games, might have to take the cover off the case unless you have any other suggestions?

I have the 6700k and 1080 Gigabyte G1 card version, very fast machine but need ideas on keeping it cool. Also once the GPU hits 83 degrees the whole PC turns off? Shouldn't it be thermal-throttling instead of this?

Just thought I would mention that it is standing up with plenty of space around it.

I suspect something else is going on.
Just out of curiosity where do you have the machine located? Is it able to breathe freely in a relatively cool room (about 20C/72F)

Start a thread about this issue. People can troubleshoot it with you. You're going to have to do some screwing around to iron this out.

From the sounds of it he bought it from OcUK recently, so they should be the ones to sort it.

ive just finished building my own one of these and i got 2 x fractal venturi pwm fans which fitted just under my reference cooler 980ti, even with these both the gpu and cpu do run quite hot so i cant imagine the gpu would work 100% without some extra help.

Not sure if the OcUk pre build come with these extra 2 fans or not.

There is space around it, it isnt in a cupboard, just standing on its own, ambient temp is around 20 degrees

No there are no extra fans fitted, I called them and asked on the phone, they said that there wasnt any extra space, although I have seen some on You Tube fitting them, however I am not sure that there is enough room with the 1080 card.
