OCUK laptop: windows 7 monitor brightness driver?

Hi all,

Just got a laptop from OCUK (W350STQ) but I can't stand Win8 so put windows 7 on instead.
Managed to find all the Win7 drivers ok except the screen brightness just refuses to work, leaving me blinded at night :-/
The brightness hotkey 'works' in that it shows the GUI for brightness level, but the actual brightness doesn't change.
Tried removing the 'Generic PnP Monitor' in device manager but it always comes back and I can't change it.
All chipset drivers appear fine... running out of ideas now.

Well that's the problem: moving that slider does nothing at all.

Also: I have noticed that when I log in, the screen is actually dimmed to the user setting for about 1/2 a second, but then goes to full brightness again, as if the settings work but then crash out or something.
Checked the windows event log just in case: nothing.

Spent all last night un/re-installing graphics drivers to no avail
