Years ago I'd buy components and self build, but as I've got older and lazier I can't be bothered anymore! I'm replacing an HP Omen 17 gaming laptop which has given up the ghost (currently been sent back to HP under warranty) but I've decided to switch back to desktop gaming after a brief flirt with gaming laptops.

So looked through OcUK's prebuilt or built to order gaming systems for around the £1k to £1400 ish mark. There seems to be a huge choice and if im honest, I'm well out of the loop when it comes to gaming PC kit these days. So looking for some advice and suggestions on what to pull the trigger on from the selection that OcUK currently have.

What's best 'bang per buck' prebuilt/configured systems wise? It'll be mainly used for gaming and general tasks. Don't require a monitor but will require an O/S.

Thanks.

What resolution do you game at? What frame rate?

Case size preference?

Personally, I’d be looking for:

High airflow case
i5 13600K
16GB RAM min
Twin tower air cooler
6800XT - I don’t think Nvidia offer great value atm
At least 650w PSU
1TB or 2TB SSD

As a minimum spec. Obviously you could swap out the i5 for AMD if it offers better value - no value in preferring one over the other, it’s about performance for the money.

Just having a play with the configurators and I think the first one I did is the best value:

My basket at OcUK:
  • 1 x AMD - Starfield SI Game Bundle (SKU: DIG-AMD-00543) = £0.00
  • 1 x OcUK Gaming Buzzard - AMD Ryzen 5 7600 Radeon RX 7600 Gaming PC (SKU: FS-19D-OG) = £1,256.90
    • Case: 1 x Phanteks Eclipse G360A Mid Tower Airflow PC case - Satin Black
    • CPU: 1 x AMD Ryzen 7 7700 Eight Core 5.30GHz (Socket AM5) Processor - Retail
    • Memory: 1 x Corsair Vengeance EXPO 32GB (2X16GB) DDR5 PC5-41600C40 5200MHz Dual Channel Kit - Black (CMK32GX5M2B5200Z40)
    • Graphics Card: 1 x Sapphire Radeon RX 7600 Pulse Gaming 8GB GDDR6 PCI-Express Graphics Card
    • Primary Solid State Drive (M.2: 1 x WD Blue SN570 1TB SSD NVME M.2 2280 PCIe Gen3 Solid State Drive (WDS100T3B0C)
    • Operating System: 1 x Build Stock Microsoft Windows 11 Home Advanced - Systems

Total: £1,264.90 (includes delivery: £7.99)

Good build for 1080p, 7700 isn't necessary, but I like the look of the spec overall.

This build moves up to a 6700 XT, but not sure that's worth it for £155.

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £1,419.98 (includes delivery: £7.99)

This is a self-build comparison, with similar spec:

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £1,334.92 (includes delivery: £11.98)

This is a self-build comparison with a high-end card, just because everyone likes a CPU bottleneck (though, would be good for 4K):

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £1,446.88 (includes delivery: £11.98)

Hi guys, many thanks. 1080p is pretty much what I was thinking, resolution wise.

I'd take the first one, in that case :) Ryzen 7 7700 + RX 7600 is a decent base and should take at least one GPU upgrade in the future without a new CPU (possibly with new PSU, don't know what they plan to fit).

Hi folks, many thanks for the replies. Quick question on GPU spec - is it worth going for a 12Gb over an 8Gb spec GPU? Or will 8Gb be sufficient for a couple of years to come?
