I found this through Facebook and tried it

You can easily take the detachable face plate out (take it out from the front two clips first) and it does cover quite a big portion of the lenses which is pretty stupid of their design team IMO.
As a test, open Oculus store and look at the center of the home button. With the flace plate in I can only see an orange corner of luckys tale which I have in recent 4 things on the left. Take the faceplate out and I can see most of it!

I dont think it does anything special with god rays but maybe worth it just for the FOV

It's the same with the Vive, the closer you can get your eyes to the lenses the bigger your FOV will be. The trade-off is comfort, so the designers have to find a happy medium considering the amount of different face shapes people have.

Some people are using no cushioning at all which I imagine is horrible, or at the very least a thin layer of fabric/foam.

The problem when you take the faceplate out is you realise you need it for comfort due to the shape of the lenses. The headset is even more uncomfortable without it. I'm finding the CV1 not exactly comfortable as is :( And that was one of the main reasons i chose it over the Vive. There should have been more IPD options and more space for people with glasses.

Yep, having had to return my rift for a fault and not getting a replacement in 2 months of waiting, I switched to the Vive and it is much more comfortable with or without glasses, but in particular putting it on/off with glasses is a boat load easier with the Vive.

the vive's default face plate is very well cushioned and adjusted all the way in (you can adjust it further away if you want or if you have particularly big glasses), you can change the cushion for a thinner but still padded interface and its still pretty comfortable, but I didn't really notice any improvement in FOV so I'm sticking with the default face pad and just having it adjusted to its minimum distance setting
