Oculus DK2 Ready Build Advice

Hi All,

I'm currently pulling together the specs for a new build to complement the arrival of the Oculus Rift DK2 which should hopefully land in July.

I'm moving from my trusty i7 920 @ 2.67Ghz build which has served me well but has started to struggle with what I'm throwing at it. It will go to a good home as my 13 yr old son will get to inherit it!

Any advice you can give me on the spec below will be gratefully received. I've chosen 2400 memory but am not sure if it's the most suitable choice. I've also gone for the sealed watercooler approach as I'm not quite ready to build my own (struggle to fix a dripping tap...). The power supply is 850w to cover me if I SLI in future.

Cheers,

Plumby

Thanks Stulid.

Replaced the PSU.

Any particular reason for the Gigabyte motherboard over the MSI. They're about the same price so are there specific pro/ cons?

Cheers

Longer warranty and the slightly cheaper price, the gigabyte has SATA express (the MSI requires an optional add on) and dual BIOS, apart from that they are very similarly specced.

Ok thanks.

Done some slight tinkering. Changed my mind on the case & have gone for a NZXT H440.

Added some fans to replace the case stock ones.

Added an external drive as the case doesn't support internal optical drive. I only use it for ripping the odd film/ cd so I can put them on my phone so an external one will be fine.

Getting twitchy on the buy button now!

Your specs are fine for Oculus. Why have you ordered x2 Optical drives though? One internal and one external.

If I was you I'd ditch the internal one, I have the Samsung one you have on shopping list its saves a couple of cables runs inside the case and will gave room to play with later (should you need it). It'll look cleaner externally to :D

I have DK1 Oculus and its great but I'm holding out now for the retail version. Good luck with your build, let us know what you think of DK2 when you get it up and running.

EDIT* Sorry I missed the part where you said your case doesn't support internal drive :D

Thanks. Forgot to delete the internal one!

Very excited about the DK2! As a 46 year old, I've waited 30 years for VR. Never mind Multiplayer Elite in VR!!!

I thought I'd wait for the Consumer version when the DK1 kickstarter kicked off. I've sat there for the last year regretting that decision whilst looking on jealously. When DK2 was announce I couldn't wait any longer.

thel33ter : I've got a H105 CPU cooler in the list - hopefully that should be enough!

I dunno if you have it but the Outerra world demo is incredible with Oculus, flying an Apache Gunship through the Himalayas is just awesome.
I'd love to upgrade to DK2 but I have to resist that temptation, I'm 42 and like you many years ago I thought VR was gonna be the next big thing but it just fizzled out.
That's why when Oculus came along I joined Kickstarter right away, great bit of kit.

Thanks.

I'm currently making a list of the demo's/ games to try when my Rift arrives. I'll add Outerra to the list!

The Steam sale has kept me on my toes looking for Rift supported bargains. Just bought Slender. Trouble is I'm a bit of a wuss when it comes to scary games - God knows how I'll cope with them in the rift...!

Right, I'm about to press the buy button on this little lot. Changed the SSD to a newer, cheaper, better MX100.

Probably need to add some Thermal paste.

Would I need any extra connectors/ extenders that don't come with any of the parts? I don't want to start and not be able to complete!

Any last minute advice before I go for it would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Sorry stulid,

Didn't spot the the Motherboard question!

Rather than buying tonight I've ended up at the pub so I'd better not press buy in my current state ;-)

I did do a bit more research before I left and have now moved towards the

Asus MAXIMUS VII RANGER ATX LGA1150 Motherboard

Still no SATA-E but I'm not convinced it'll take off in the long run.

The Ranger sticks with the Red/ black theme of the build as well.

Another night to sleep on it. Oh how how hate the pre-buying nerves...
