Oculus Rift - Grey Veil effect

Hi Guys,

Got a Rift for Xmas what can I say ....amazing :)

However I do have one issue on dark scenes such as the Lost animation. With dark backgrounds I get a dirty screen / grey mist type effect which is really obvious. When the scene turns lighter is goes away.

I thought it was just one of the downsides of an early technology but after reading this

https://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/com...1_black_veil_on_image_something_like/d5thcdg/

it seems to be an actual fault? Do I try and get a replacement and run the risk of getting a worse unit?

Does anyone else get the same issue?

Lost is really bad, Gunjack very good and Elite somewhere in the middle for example.

I appreciate there doesn't seem to be much interest in this However is that because nobody has seen this issue before or is it just accepted as being a limitation of the technology?

I've found various other people with this issue online but it's far from everyone. I have a few days left to return it but it's a concern it will have the same issue or worse I.e dead pixels, un even screens.

It's really just looks like a film grain on the back of the lenses only visible in dark areas such as Lost, Dreadhalls etc

Thanks

Thanks for your reply but it's not a focus issue the screen clarity on mine is very good apart from this. This is fixed all over both lenses.

I think I'm going to get it replaced just to be sure.

Shame to have this issue as it's a great bit of kit.

If you have issues with the sweet spot try bringing it further down I found this to make a big difference.

Thanks guys for letting me know it's a strange on as I initially thought it was just one of those things but then started reading and thought it was just a minority.

It's a bit like googling you symptoms you always end up with the worse case scenario lol

Just to add to this the following post shows the issue really well

https://forums.oculus.com/vip/discussion/37842/two-and-a-half-problems-with-my-cv1

Scroll down to the veil section and photos 3 & 4 show left / right eye with the issue. Unfortunately for him it's worse in the left lens. My issue is slightly worse than photo 4 right eye.

Anyway going to keep it and enjoy it !! Will be upgrading to cv2 / vive 2 anyhow!

I tried with the SPUD setting off last night (not the tool but it's only a registry key that needs to be created - I can post for any interested)

It made zero difference for my issue :( I tested it again last night using Dreadhalls and even the wife said it's not right so I think mine is on the extreme end of the scale.

She's on the way back from JL now with a replacement so I will update once I get a chance to test!

Any marked reduction will be most welcome not expecting it to go completely. Fingers crossed!!

OK quick assessment still there but much better. Less immersion breaking as the effect now sits in the background where before it was up close breaking the 3D effect to some extent. Lost is still a bit pants but Dreadhalls had no banding in the grain. The main menu I had to focus to see it where as last night it was in your face.

The IPD screen (Green Cross) shows the right lens is slightly clearer than the left but I'll need to use it more to see if this matters.

Will test again later but first impressions are improved still not perfect but I think I'll be able to look past it going forward.

Hope it's not MK JL they will think somethings going on lol
