Oculus Rift inventor Palmer Luckey is funding Trump’s racist meme machine

Some thoughts:
- Yes, I also think that Trump is a moronic racist idiot
- Just as per our own Brexit, members of the US public are entitled to their own opinions, and until they've stopped over their own internal laws on the subject, we should respect that. Just as I don't go stand in the middle of my local high street to call the population in general morons for voting out in Brexit. In this case, that also applies to Palmer
- Do you believe that Palmer's political beliefs may in any way affect the quality of the product produced by Oculus?

Frankly, this appears to be a story over nothing.
He's a guy, he's allowed to have an opinion, even if that doesn't agree with yours.

I don't really understand why it's such a big story...

Bit ironic people saying they are selling/wont buy/won't develop for rift... Oculus is owned by Facebook which is a massive Clinton supporter and very much anti-Trump. Oculus themselves and indeed Facebook do not support Trump or his policies.

So bearing that in mind I don't see why someone's individual political views should really come into the discussion to be honest. Unless he's involved in illegal activity, what he does and who he supports is his own business in my opinion.

And let's be honest, would you vote for either of those two? Hillary is very much just the least-worse option... not an inspiring candidate in her own right. While I think Trump becoming president might just be the worst thing that has ever happened to the world, I can also see why people wouldn't want to support Clinton.

There is a big difference between political views and funding abuse. Anyone can have any political view they want to but I draw the line at funding abuse.

Not only that, but that means the money that he got from the FaceBook sale and Kickstarters backers and Oculus purchasers went towards the funding of hate and abuse.

That's not on.

With all due respect, you're talking about a US politician supposedly representing a good deal of the US public. Think carefully how you treat this.

He's not some ex Nazi accused of war crimes.

Whilst you might think it'll make good reading in the Daily Mail, can't we act a little more like grown ups here?

I can only imagine the terrible things people (employees, shareholders, and the like) are doing with the money I give them for anything.

I despise paying my local council because they will abuse and talk down to me despite me paying towards their life as a (un)civil servant. Unfortunately I don't really get to chose wether or not I pay them. :D

Everyone is free to boycott consumer products and servicds as they please. I love my Rift. :)

what, you mean like how grown up it is funding an organisation whose sole purpose is creating internet images to disparage and attack someone?

Let's re-clarify something here.
Trump (however unpleasant we may view him), is considered a respectable businessman by many in the US.
If you're saying that Palmer is not entitled an opinion, then unfortunately you're impeding on free speech and thought, which is exactly the type of thing that you're complaining about.

Like it or not, it's NOT money from Oculus is it? It's from Palmer, i.e. out of his own cash. So unless you want to introduce draconian censorship based upon your own opinions, then this is frankly irrelevant.

I'll ask again, please don't bring Daily Mail level of BS here.

Just to be clear as well, take a look at this article https://www.engadget.com/2016/09/26/why-is-the-oculus-founder-trying-to-bring-hateful-memes-offline/

Specifically this:

The one billboard sign that has thus far been attributed to Nimble America says that Clinton is "too big to jail" alongside a grossly distorted image of her face. It's possibly a reference to her considerable political stature insulating her from prosecution for misuse of a personal email server -- but the picture makes it an attack on her looks, as well.

So let's not get carried away... is it something I support? No. But Palmer hasn't been linked to funding the KKK, he (in a very poor display of decision making in my opinion) supported a low brow organisation which so far has managed to make a single and relatively tame billboard about Clinton.

It really is a storm in a tea cup... More disturbing to me personally is the attempt to retrospectively wriggle out of it and the apparently dishonesty and lack of transparency in making the donation.

But either way, it reflects poorly on Palmer personally imo and has no bearing whatsoever on my enjoyment or otherwise of the Rift.
