I was contemplating pre ordering an Oculus Rift despite the price tag, but it seems my I5 2500k wont be enough to run anything. So id have to upgrade Cpu, mb etc, Im not THAT bothered that id fancy spending over 1k just to have VR. Think I might wait to see what other VR stuff comes and all that.

My Pc has no problems with any games or anything. p8p67 pro, i5 2500k, Asus GTX 970 strix, 16gb memory.

However, im wondering in general is there any CPU's out at the moment that are worth upgrading to or is there CPU's coming soon to wait for or should I just stick with what I have until something real next gen comes down the pipe line?

Opinions please!

Well Broadwell-E is due out in the next couple of months or you could get a Haswell-E CPU now. They are probably the best options out there at the moment and that are going to be available any time soon.

Your 2500K is fine.

All you need do is buy a faster GPU, when they are released later in the year. If you need it sooner, you may consider selling your 970 to take some of the bite out of plumping for a 980Ti or Fury, but that's it.

On the Oculus website theres a program thing that checks your system compatability & it says my GPU is fine, just my CPU is not enough.

Your CPU is definitely fine. At the Rift's resolution your GPU will be far more important.

There's little appreciable difference between the i5 2500k and the i5 6600k (current Skylake i5).

I've ordered one and my rig smashes firestrike minimum spec by a fair margin... will give it a go.. if it doesn't cut it then i'll reluctantly upgrade. Due to get it in April
