I've tried Gear VR however the pixelation was pretty bad, how much better are these in terms of detail? If they look pixelated then I know I'll be disappointed.

What phone are you using that the gear VR is bad pixel wise? Mobile phones are so compressed pixel wise that it's the best VR for stuff like that. I think your in for a real shock when you put a headset on :P

The Oculus Rift and HTC Vive are completely different in terms of IQ, particularly if you have a PC powerful enough to use supersampling. As for which of the two PC headsets is better I'll just copy and paste what I posted in Techen's thread below:

But tbh the Rift is the better buy out of the two when the Touch controllers have released in December. I've listed the advantages that each headset has over the other below:

Rift

  • Headset is lighter and more comfortable to wear
  • Display is sharper and clearer
  • Good quality built-in headphones
  • Easier to set up
  • Less SDE
  • The Rift has the advantages of ATW and ASW so performance will better - no judder
  • ASW has enabled the Rift to lower their minimum specs, so if you have a higher spec machine you'll get a MUCH better performance allowing you to run the likes of Project CARS with all bells and whistles.
  • More software and better quality software available once Touch has released without the need to mess around with Revive.
  • The Rift and Touch controllers are 20 quid cheaper than the Vive (there's no need to get a third camera despite Oculus recommending 3). Having two cameras will give you the exact same occlusion issues as two Lighthouses. You'll have around 1m less space in length and width to play Room Scale games in though.
  • For me personally having the Touch controllers sold separately means that I can spread the cost of the total VR experience. I bought a Rift on Saturday and due to having split payments I can afford to get the Touch controllers next year. If I had to pay it all in one go I wouldn't have had a Rift in my home for the last 4 days.
  • The Touch controllers feel more like and extension of your hands, you'll forget that you're even holding a controller after a while.
  • The Touch controllers have finger tracking.

Vive

  • Motion controllers out of the box, but this advantage will be moot once the Touch controllers have released.
  • More space for glasses wearers
  • Less noticeable god rays
  • A slightly larger FOV
  • A slightly larger play space for Room Scale.

Given the above lists I can't see why anyone would get a Vive over a Rift unless they have problems with FaceBook and/or Palmer Luckey being a bit of an idiot. You'll get a much better VR experience with the Rift and Touch controllers in December.

They don't have finger tracking? They detect if you fingers are pressed against the controller which ain't finger tracking.

Over 140,000 Vives sold, no Rift sales figures, wonder why?

There is a need to get a third maybe fourth camera to achieve roomscale with all the USB ports and cables to go with it.

More software, eh?

Vive has waaay better iq than rift! The rift has horrific god rays. I literally couldn't stand it. I wouldn't rate touch until it's out either btw..

waaaay better? From everything that I have read the image quality between the Rift and Vive was roughly similar with most people who have both saying that the Rift is better. God rays are a problem but it seems to vary from person to person. Some people have solved it completely with the faceplate mod.

I was curious and I checked, They do have finger tracking....

Sure they only have two modes, On and off but the possibilities of this is amazing...

That's not tracking their fingers it just recognises when the finger is pressed or not against the controller and the animation exaggerates this.

Silly argument. The Rift sales figures aren't in yet, therefore the Rift must be worse than the Vive

Up to a week ago HTC hadn't released any sales figures either.

Not silly at all, what do you mean aren't in, they must know how many units they have sold?

Would it of not been a good PR move to counter to Vive's announcement with one of their own?

Tracking or not, The fact that it can trace all 5 fingers is just amazing. Do you not agree this opens more impressive stuff in terms of gameplay? Also have you seen Lone Echo for touch? Just mind blowing stuff..

I think you'll be in for a major disappointment. It only tracks fingers touching or pushing buttons (basically your thumb and forefinger). Your other three fingers will be gripping the controller.

Some Vive games do something similar with the buttons on the Vive controller to depict hands and finger motions e.g. Raw Data. The Touch benefits from an additional state of determining a finger resting on a button or the thumb rest so can make a few extra guesses at what your hand is doing. It's really not what I'd call true finger tracking...

This is just plan incorrect. Both have god rays.
I had both the Rift and the Vive and so was able to test them back to back. The IQ is very similar. So similar that in isolation I couldn't tell which is better.
The Rift seems to have better optics but the Vive is brighter. Both are fine.

Yes, it is a silly argument.

A guy gives his plus/minus points to the Vive and the Rift and chooses the Rift, your response

 How does that counter anything he said? HTC only published these figures 5 days ago. Oculus aren't HTC though, they might not release their sales figures until the new year. I have no doubt that the Vive has sold better as it is the more complete experience at the moment. Once Oculus gets touch controllers it will be a hard choice to make. Early sales figures will give no indication as to which is better.

Vive: Better room scale, better for glass wearers, less god rays. taller FOV
Rift: More comfortable, easier setup, better touch controllers, better clarity
