OCZ Reaper madness!

I've been testing my memory OCZ Reapers 8500 (OCZ2RPR10661G) with help from BigWayne. My problem is the memory does not perform how it is rated, for me to run 1066 the volts have to be 2.3v minimum.(rated @2.1v)

Alarmingly, after visiting the OCZ website and finding posts with the same mobo as mine, im reading the same problem others have had. The response usually end in the user having to enter into RMA (is this replacement prodedure?) and a stern warning not to run them at 2.3v

My question is - does this happen a lot with memory?

It must be an issue specific to your particular motherboard, i ran 2 different sets of ocz reaper (pc6400 and pc8500) in an asus p45 board, both sets on the correct voltage of 2.1. I also tested some ocz platinum from a friend, which is almost identical to reaper, minus the heatsink which ran at 2.1v as well. And your correct, RMA is return to manufacturer.

Got 3 sets of reaper 6400 and 2 sets of 8500 here and they all run at rated voltage and even 0.1 below rated, at rated timings, fine... not even had the problem a few people have had where the heatsink slipped off... so far.

Im curious if my mobo is telling me the correct voltage - is it possible to measure the memory voltage? I have a quality digital multi-meter (Fluke). Or a software based monitor?

Voltage in the PC Health Status section of the BIOS is usually correct for DRAM... there is a point to measure it with a DMM but thats different from motherboard to motherboard.

Whats involved with RMA?

Proof of purchase?
Do you get a cash refund?
Do you get an product exchange?
Does it have to be tested at the other end and proven faulty?
How long does it take to sort?

Sorry for so many questions, I never gone down this route and I'm not sure if I should buy new mem until its sorted first.

You tend to get it replaced with new or refurbished. With OCZ it took me a week at one point, or 6 weeks where they unfortunately didn't have anything appropriate to replace it with. I was pretty angry about that, but forgiven them now.

OCZ run a lifetime warranty, I haven't had them ask for proof of purchase yet.

Is it hot to the touch? I'd expect it to die relatively quickly at 2.3V. Bear in mind anything over 2.15V voids warranty with ocz reaper, and you were told this on the packaging and when you bought it.

My mobo volted it on auto to 2.3v when its set at its default speed of 1066, if I drop the speed to 975 then the mobo volts it at 2.1v. Does this void my warranty? After all the memory has never been able to run at default speed with a rated voltage of 2.1v
