OCZ Vertex 2 SSD Failure?

Update: I have ordered a cheapo Samsung 120GB Evo SSD for £47, which arrives on Sunday.

Need some advice folks.

Got a Asus P8Z68 Pro motherboard. Attached to this watercooled machine is an i7 2600k running at 5ghz and the usual bits and bobs. It is my main media and gaming PC.

Woke up this morning and whacked on the PC only to be greeted by a BSOD. My x64 Win7 bootdrive is a small 80GB Vertex 2, purchased back in 2011. I had work this morning so had to do some tests upon returning.

1. Sometimes the bios see's the SSD during POST, and sometimes not. If seen, it will go beyond POST but throw up a ntldmgr missing message. Sometimes it boots windows but then black screens with the windows cursor visible and movable on a black background.

2. Upon removing the SSD and connecting it via a usb docking station to my Macbook, the contents of the device are accessible so it seems to be powering on consistently enough. I've put it to one side for now.

3. Tried connecting the SSD to another controller on my mobo but I still have issues getting into windows no matter what SATA ports I use.

4. Windows Setup, in order to do a repair is acting odd when I attempt to use it. Should the SSD be detected, sometimes it flat out states device drivers are missing and sometimes it states that the version of setup I am using is incorrect for repairing the existing OS (I am using the correct version).

Not sure what is up with the thing, and I am confident that it is the drive rather than my motherboard playing up. Since the machine is watercooled, I do have a sound setup and nothing had been moved about prior to this 'failure'. Does anyone else have experiences with Vertex 2 SSD's from 2011? Not sure what to make of my issue.

I have a 60GB (don't think they've ever made an 80GB) OCZ Vertex 2 on my desk in front of me.

Has been working absolutely fine for 5 years even when it's normally 80-90% full. I've heard bad stories about Vertex2s, but I can attest that mine has been fine.

Only reason it's not in my new one is when I upgraded to Haswell I wanted a drive to take advantage of SATA3 so I got a new 250GB. Although I'm already umming about chopping that in for a PCIe drive... Never satisfied :(
