I've just ordered a 2E and noticed the 3 shortly after.

I've not got access to SATA3 but is it worth me buying the 3 anyway?

Thanks.

The two white slots on my motherboard are the SATA3 slots, right?

****, I am thinking about USB 3.0

You can ignore this thread all together, sigh.

Further on from this, I've not decided to take the plunge.

I'm currently looking at the Corsair Force Series 3 120GB. Is the M4 120GB 'that' much better overall? From what I can see the write speed is a lot lower than the Force 3.

I decided on the 120GB since if I'm going to get a SSD at all it may as well be of a decent size. 60GB just doesn't seem enough to me at all, am I wrong in saying that?

I returned the OCZ Vertex 2E by the way :P If anyone was confused.

Nope, 60gb is a tad small for adding too much beyond the OS, but it depends on the person, some people don't have much beyond the OS. Likewise 120gb drives perform better than 60gb drives, significantly in most cases. Write speeds usually drop significantly when you half capacity. Keep in mind EVERY 120gb drive performs worse than their 240gb counterparts and the majority of ssd reviews are done in the maximum capacity for a reason. THere are reviews that compare the 120gb drives.

This is mostly a benchmarking difference, real world doesn't matter. Why does the M4 seemingly perform the same or sometimes outperform a Vertez 3 when its write speeds are specced so much higher? because sequentials mean smeg all in most situations.

Random read write from 4kb to 2mb is what really "makes" SSD performance, and in all honesty there hasn't been a huge change in performance there in the past 2-3 years. You won't get drives that break 25-30mb random 4kb reads and that has been the case for a couple years now. Writes have improved a bit, performance in high queue depth situations has risen....... the problem being most home use is limited to very low queue depth.

Sata 3/2 won't make a difference just because the sequentials don't matter really. ANY SSD from this or the last gen, or the one before that will be a HUGE improvement from an HDD, and you'd be hard pushed to notice the real world difference between an uber Vertex 3, and a Vertex 2, and probably a Vertex 1.

Thanks for making some excellent points there mate. From what you've said it doesn't matter 'much' which one I actually buy? I've heard bad things about drivers and such though, does that factor in? I'm gonna scout around for some SSD reviews.

But I presume I'd be fine going with the F3 120GB? :)
