Odd 8800GTX issue

I've been trying to decide for a few weeks if my 8800GTX has an issue. There's definately an issue, not sure if its the 8800 though. I'll try to explain:

Sometimes, when playing FPS games, I'll notice a tearing, not of "polygons" but of the screen, hortizontally, about 2/3 up the screen. The type of thing you might see when you've got V-sync issues. It almost looks like there's two parts of the screen slightly overlapping.

It is most noticable when you are panning round quickly and have heavily rendered things on screen (i.e. sky, or close to a wall etc).

Here's the odd bit. It doesn't seem to happen when I start playing a game (its noticeable on Bioshock, GoW, COD4 & Crysis), it's generally after about 10 mins of GPU cooking that it starts to happen. Heat? Don't think so. I've been hitting a max of 66c on the GPU which doesn't sound to toasty (aasuming Rivatuner temps are correct).

Using OC setting or default makes no difference. I've tried all manner of V-sync and Triple Buffering settings with no success (driver and in-game). I've tried a screen grab but everything looks OK so cannot visually demonstrate the problem.

I'm usuing the rig below and a Sammy 226BW (have same problem on 32" LCD TV).

Whilst its not spoling my enjoyment of the games, it's starting to P155 me off now as I've zoned into it.

Any idea problem-solving-meisters? Thanks.

hmmz, have you tried different drivers ?

Good point. I had the latest Forceware on it and then updated to the latest 163.75 WHQL for Crysis. Issue was there with both IIRC.

Also, running Vista 32bit.

Card is appx. 8 weeks old.

ok thats weird, I had similar issues with my 8800 ultra in vista 64 with certain drivers, but the latest ones, 163.75 are holding up.

Maybe worth uninstalling them, and reinstalling ?

Always worth a try and I really should have done so before posting here.

In any event, I've never seen this before so was hoping to come across someone who had! We're your issues the same as mine?

Just looking for some light at the end of the tunnel!

Not sure. What's best to monitor? Everest?

What temps should I be looking at idle and under load on the nb?
I don't think your mobo has an onboard sensor for the nb, but you can get a rough idea by touching the heatsink. Temps should be similar to a cpu, 30~40c

It's the only thing I can think of, that would start happening after ~10 mins. The fact that games work fine for a while, suggests that something is gradually overheating.

Have you tried using a different monitor cable?

I get this on my 2232BW + X850XT, newest drivers. Nothing moving up and down regardless, but tears left to right. would be good to find a reason, although i have only noticed it in HL1, nothing else so far

Unfortunately, didn't get a chance to look at this last night.

I've got 3 heatsinks on the IP35 Pro. One beside the CPU,one below CPU and one just beside the PCI-e slots (over and above the CPU heatsink). Which one is likely to be the NB heatsink?

Different cable? No, but again will try.

Thanks.

just thinking, do the games play smooth or does it go jerky like FPS slowdown ?

thinking windows defender/antivirus/spyware/update apps

Nope, no slow-down at all.

Although, NOD32 seems to have "updated the kernal" frequently after exiting games.

The NB is always placed between the CPU, the gfx slot, and the ram slots (it controls traffic between the CPU, Ram, & Gfx card, so it needs to be close to all 3).

The heatsink near the PCI slots is the Southbridge, and the one beside the CPU is for cooling the mosfets (cpu power regulators).

Abit used to put fans on their NBs, but they were prone to getting noisy after a while, so now they use the same heatpipe solution as Asus.
