Just really wanting to get some opinions on some disconnection issues I am having and the lack of BT's ability to solve the problem so here it is;

Got back from shopping with the wife last week to find that my line had dropped from its normal circa 12000kbs down stream sync to 4000kbs. Called Entanet, did a line test came back with requiring an engineer visit.

Engineer 1: Could not specifically identify the fault but defo one there, thinks it is on the pole which is unfortunately is a power pole so need to get a specialist to check it. I explained that in addition to this I get the occasional noise on the line that starts clicking then gets noisy and finally resolves itself, normally following a disconnect/re-sync.

The line returns to the following:

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 7899 kbps 979 kbps
Line Attenuation 33.5 db 16.4 db
Noise Margin 15.4 db 8.6 db

Engineer 2 (supposed specialist): I was not available. Turns up chats to my wife, had not read previous engineers notes, listens to the phone cant hear anything wife says not really had any issues since last engineer which we had not but the line was still not back to normal, engineer shrugs shoulders and leaves.

Called Entanet explained the situation again, they say better take it up with PSTN provider (BT) so I log a call with BT.

Engineer 3: turns up this morning cant find any fault with house wiring (which we knew already), going to check the pole and will return later with another engineer.

Since then I have double checked the fault:

currently got the faceplate off and using the test socket with a filter (BT) with modem and wired phone (BT), when I go to make a call (or just listen to dial tone) can hear faint clicking and noise in addition when the receiver is lifted my upstream SNR goes mental (shows something like -65432db) and the modem disconnects.

Anyone got any ideas on the actual fault, I have an XTE-2005 face plate and when I contacted them to find out if it could be a fault with the faceplate they suggestes "It is probably a line fault called a HR leg"; so basically I cant answer or make calls with the line going down even when using the test socket.

With one leg disconnected in a cable joint ADSL often works [at a reduced rate] but voice calls do not. I would be pretty sure this is a line fault. Hope you get an engineer that can find it.

Well, looks like 3rd times a charm, the engineer actually checked the white connection box that converts the pole wire to the master socket wire; result corroded contacts. He also carried checking things and ended up changing the connection from the green box on the side of the road to the exchange as there was some degradation in signal quality there too, thank god I finally got a competent engineer.

He was absolutely shocked to find that neither of the other two engineers checked the little white box as the corrosion was clearly visible even to me when he popped the cover.

Just been back on to Entanet now to get BT to reset my SNR profile, so hopefully it should be back by the end of the night, then just have to wait for my profile to update.
