I thought I'd be nice to my brother today and bought him a nice shiny new 200gb ide hard drive and gave him my old dvd rewriter.

This was so that I could get rid of vista (which was making his pc run like a narcoleptic dog, and it didn't help that almost all 3 of his 80gb hdd's were full.) and put windows xp back on it.

So anyway I removed the drive that had vista on it (he moved everything he needed off of it onto the other hdd's) and put in the new western digital ide hdd and the new dvd rw.

Put in the windows xp install disc, set it to boot from dvd drive no problem.

After that the problems DID start.

It wouldn't see the 200gb drive until I disconnected the other 2 that remained in there, and then when I finally got xp installed, when I connected the other two drives back up so that he could get his data, it wouldn't recognise the new hdd again O_o

It recognised the two that I had just reconnected fine and it sees them fine in the bios, but it no longer recognises the new one unless I disconnect the other two.

I've tried swapping ide connections in all manner of combinations but to no avail.

SO due to being young and inexperienced with these older systems I turn to general hardware for help!

Thanks :)

To be able to give any meaningfull help, you are going to have to list all the hardware involved. By that i mean eveything, mobo(make and model), bios version, make and model of all the hardware.

Ah, right sorry forgot.

Unfortunately been kicked out of his room so he can go to bed but from what I can remember he has:

Athlon xp 2400 processor
not sure what motherboard, I'll find out tomorrow
3x 256mb pc 2100 ram
Ati x800xt graphics card
audigy 2 sound card
an IBM 76gb hdd of some sort
Seagate 80gb hdd (not sure what model although it said 3800 in the bios i think)
and now a WD 200gb HDD
Powersupply is some old 350watt thing.

I'll get you a detailed list tomorrow.

Thanks for the reply though :)

ah, that could be it.

Where would these jumpers be? (as I've never dealt with amd/oldish pc's I have no idea).

The motherboard is an Asus A7V333

thanks :)
