Odd behaviour with GTX460 and 500w S12 PSU

After first installing my Gigabyte GTX460 1GB OC - into a Gigabyte UD2H AM3 motherboard - I found my USB keyboard had stopped working. USB mouse continued working... odd. Using a different USB port made no difference.

Rebooted with keyboard in PS/2 socket, could boot into Windows. Unplugged from PS/2, back into USB... total system crash. Restarted a couple times until it worked with kb in USB slot.

Load up Portal to quickly test 3D working. On starting a new game the USB kb becomes disabled again. Unplugged and plugged into a different USB port, could move around.

**Noticed that the air coming from the back of my Seasonic S12 500W PSU is very hot** Isn't normally.

Some facts:
*The PSU has only 1 cable with PCI-e power connectors - there are two connectors on one cable. Don't know why but this bothered me :p
*My USB ports all worked fine before swapping the old 8800GT with the 460.
*I have a minimal number of drives (1hd, 1dvdburner)
*The case is well cooled with intake and exhaust fans.

Now why should the 460 be messing with my USB ports all of a sudden? Is this a symptom of a lack of available power? I don't like how hot the PSU has become, but I thought a Seasonic 500w would be fine with only 1 GTX460 card?

[edit: was right the first time, PSU is 500w not 550w!]

I can't comment on the PSU heat, but I have seen a similar issue with a USB keyboard. The USB controller turned out to be set in the BIOS to the slowest setting even though it read differently in the selection. Set it to what the manual said was the highest speed and the issue went away.

Well, touch wood it's working atm, but Google has returned a number of threads talking about IRQ conflicts, Giga/Asus motherboard incompatibility, and other stuff.

I'll just leave it as is, and hope for the best for the time being :p

Run furmark and see if you got total stability. It sounds like your USB ports are not getting enough juice. You could be overloading a single rail, try experementing with bundled PCI-EX cables.
460gtx are thirsty cards lets be honest which fermi isnt and it still requires 450W as MINIMUM SPECS?

The PSU you got was no doubt a decent PSU back in 2006 but for todays standards its a bit weak and right on the cusp of 460 recommeded PSU power.

It survived a few passes and a benchmark in Heaven. I'm sure it's fine after all :)

The PSU exhaust is, however, "toasty"!
