Hey,

Im new here so greetings to you all. My problem is that when i download my computer begins to become unstable and eventually crashes. I have recently bought the computer. Do you think its a hard drive problem? although my harddrive is a new Hitachi Deskstar T7K250 NCQ 250GB. I running on xp. I would apreciate any help cheers.

Thanks a lot,
Simon

When you say crashes do you mean it reboots or freezes?
if it reboots the go to control panel-system-advanced-startup and recovery- settings and uncheck the box marked "automatically restart".
this should give you a blue screen the next time it crashes with an error message. Post that or google it and you should get some indication of what is causing the problem.
Welcome to the forums btw

Yeah, Im clean on that front. Ive tried changing my wintv card to a differnt slot because i thort it might be a conflict with that but dint have any luck with that. Ive totaly run out of ideas now

Well firstly i use Mozila but the problem is consitent when downloading with any program. I get the problem on bit lord and limewire for example. And yes i have sp2 installed you really think that will help? I guess i could give it a go.

Thanks a lot

The PFN List corrupt error brings this up on microshafts website
MSDN item
Even thou that item is about win 2000 it still applies to winXP as they are very similar. It says its a hardware compatability issue, have you installed any new hardware ?? new usb items?

Hmmm

Well now the problems worstened. I am currently in safe mode with networking. When i boot up normal it gets into windows and after afew secounds blue screens saying a kernel stack driver needs to be replaced.? I got this problem after running the windows driver verify program but i did not remove any drivers. God knows what now? any ideas??? And no i havent installed anything new, ive had the problem since i can remember really? probobly since i built

Cheers

When you changed the hard disk did you just clone the current install from the old drive on to the new? or did you do a full format and reinstall? also if you formated did you do a quick format or normal format?

Personaly with the problems you are having i would format and reinstall again. if you can use safemode to backup anything you need to.

in safe mode stick your winXP cd in the drive click start>run and type sfc.exe /scannow and see what that does.

Also I would remove all devices attached to the rig, anything USB, and network card, tv cards and sound cards and boot windows again on a bare system, if it boots then its possible that its just a driver conflict.

What the full system spek of your rig?

Nope, i will try removing it now tho just gunna try with a bare boot first.

Rig is

Sapphire pure crossfire
Anthlon 64 3000
Ati x800 gto2
Ram is 2x Kingston 256
2x Samsung 256
could it be the memory?

also Got a pci Wintv card and i am running windows pro sp2.
Do none of you thing its a harddrive problem?
Cheers for all the help

I would try booting with just one stick of ram in and see if that makes any difference, also reset the bios to defaults and select the reset configuration data option so it readresses all the hardware in the system.

If it dosent work with that stick of ram try another. also download and leave memtest running on each stick of ram for a couple of hours.

I would say its most likely a hardware conflict causing your problems or a dodgy stick of ram.
