My next door neighbour just came round with a package for me; a pink iPhone 5C in a box for a 'Kazam Trooper 455' Android phone. No cables. No documentation. My address on the front, but someone else's name. A courier dropped it off earlier.

Do I:

A) Contact the courier, go through all the hassle of returning the phone?

B) Stick it on eBay?

C) Keep it and wait to see if anyone contacts me?

What legal responsibility do I have for the package?

AFAIK:

You should contact the company or courier, if asked to return it then the sender must pay and it shouldn't inconvenience you. Return within a good time (i.e. within 14 days)

If you hear nothing after 28 days I think it's yours to keep, grats!

Since you know it isn't yours, you have a legal responsibility to take reasonable steps to get it to the person it belongs to if you can do so (and you can do so - you can contact the courier).

UK law includes the concept commonly known as "theft by finding". Basically, if you get something which you know isn't yours and you can take reasonable steps to get it to the person it belongs to but don't, it's theft.

Is this not a known scam where a chap will arrive tomorrow saying it was delivered in error and he's here to collect it. They then have a mobile contract with your address tied to it.

That phone is one of the weirdest i've seen.

Could be one of those scams where they send you the phone then send you the bill after.

You are of course not required to pay a penny, just contact the seller/courier explaining you didnt order it and you will make it available for them to come and collect.

There was a law stating you could keep it if they didnt collect within a month (or 6 months if you didnt contact them), but i'm not sure it's current any more.

It's a used, and not in particularly great condition, iPhone. In the wrong box. With no cables, no SIM tool, and the manual for the other phone.

I guess I best make sure I email the courier tomorrow as I'm off on holiday at the weekend for a month. They aren't likely to get it until I come back, but at least they'll know I'm not trying to nick it.
