Odd fan issue with 7970

I am having a problem with a 7970 I have installed for my housemate,

The card in question is now 6-7months old, always been run at stock speeds (1050/5700) and until now performed flawlessly,
Today it's started with this odd issue (see pic) and when the gpu use increases it gives off significant coil whine, It also pops up with 'display driver stopped responding' from time to time,
I haven't had this problem with any of my 7970's so I was curious as to if anyone has had this before?

The system has been run at stock clocks thoughout (gpu/cpu/ram)
It is i7 2600k, 2x4gb, vtx x-edition 7970
The drivers have not been updated and nothing has been recently installed, it's been working fine the last few months??

Try updating the drivers first to rule that out. Uninstall old ones, restart, download new ones, install, restart and report back.

It does seem to have fixed the gpu use issue so thanks for that
I shall order him to do lots of gaming now to see if the error pops up.
Strange how it works one minute then buggers up the next with no changes o.O
