Odd IE8 tabbed browsing issue

Using W7 x64 and IE8.

I am seeing some random issue on some Google search results when pressing the centre mouse button to open a link in a new tab. Some sites open in a new tab when mouse 3 is pressed but some others do not. The results seem to be random.

For example: if I Google "postage stamp ssd" and use mouse 3 to open links in a new tab some open in the same tab where others open as intended.

Can anyone else reproduce this? It also does it on my other PC and work laptop.

Mine appear to consistently open in new tabs. Windows x64 with IE8. What sort of mouse do you have?

I get inconsistent results with the search term you're using, sometimes they'll open up in a new tab but sometimes they use the same tab, but it isn't always the same. Strange.

Have you tried playing around with the tab settings in Internet Options to see if it makes any difference?

Edit: I've just noticed that if after middle-clicking to get a new tab you then go to that tab and then go back to your search results it'll open the next result in a new tab, it also seems to want the page to have finished loading before it'll use a new tab, if the last tab is still loading and you middle-click another link it'll use the original tab.

It is a little odd and i cannot figure it out. Not sure if it is a setting or a recent patch. But all 3 systems started the same behaviour around the same time.

Edit: I tried what you said about the new tab but it doesn't work for me.
