Odd Internet connectivity problem - Help appreciated

Hi guys,

I've been having a very odd problem with the Internet the past couple of days. For no apparent reason whatsoever, I can not access any WWW page. This can happen at any time. However all my other applications that access the Internet work as normal. It's as if my HTTP traffic has been blocked, and the only way I can fix it is by rebooting the computer.

I've tried to fix it by typing "ipconfig /renew" in command prompt and I have checked I have an IP and a default gateway IP. I can ping sites successfully. I run the Windows Vista network diagnostic tool and it reports nothing is wrong and suggests I just restart my network adapter, which doesn't solve anything.

I'm completely baffled as to why this is happening. Only thing I can think of is that I purchased Zonealarm Pro a couple of days ago, and this may be causing the problem but I have tried shutting down Zonealarm when I do lose connectivity and that doesn't resolve anything. I have also tried multiple browsers. At the time of installing Zonealarm, I also installed a load of Vista updates, which also prompted me to reinstall the service pack even though it was already installed.

Any help would be appreciated :) Restarting every hour or so is not fun :(

edit - Running Vista 64 bit.
edit2 - Gah, just realised this could have gone in the Network sub-forum :( But is a Windows issue!

How are you connected to the Intarweb? Router? If so, its not messing up is it? Just wondering if restarting the PC is causing the router to give you a new IP or something.

Not accessing the Internet through a proxy? Can't say I know enough about proxies to know if a proxy would cause problems for HTTP traffic but be OK for everything else.

When you say "other applications", what do you mean? MSN? Your AV?

You could try installing the recent Vista updates one at a time and see if your connectivity issue goes when you remove a certain update?

Btw I'll ask Tolien if he thinks this thread is better off here or in the Networking forum. :)

Sorry I somehow forgot to mention all that info in the OP!

I'm connected to a switch, which is then connected to a modem. I believe everyone else in the house can access the Internet ok. Restarting the NIC or typing in "ipconfig /renew" should give me a new IP so I don' think that would be the issue?

I'm not acccessing the Internet through a proxy, not that I am aware anyway.

Other applications can be MSN, Steam, and ping. It's like all HTTP traffic is just being blocked. I've tried using Chrome, IE7, and FF and they still have the same issues.

renewing your IP wont necessarily give you a different IP depends whats next in the available list, if its the same as what you had then youll get it back again.

sounds a bit like a DNS issue to me maybe? can you ping wwwgoogle.co.uk when the issue occurs and then by IP (209.85.229.104). or something is blocking port 80 after a period of time.

out of interest uninstall zonealarm (pointless software imo anyway) and see if the problem reoccurs.

Pinging to sites works fine, which is what makes it very odd!

I ran WINSOCKFIX about an hour ago so fingers crossed it will have fixed my problem. If not I will uninstall Zonealarm. Although I did pay for a license for it :(

seriously, zone alarm doesnt really do anything that windows firewall and your router firewall (both free) can do..
