Odd issue with frame rates and PC Gaming on OLED TV

Hi all,

So I’ve discovered something very odd when I connect my gaming PC to my OLED TVs.

I have an LG 65 inch C8 series. When I connect via HDMI to my 2080Ti, it runs fine at 1440p, but on some games (such as RDR 2) switching to 4k introduces some stutter or slower frame rate.

I’ve always put this down to the fact that the machine simply couldn’t handle 4K at steady 60fps.

HOWEVER: I’ve just purchased a new CX 48 inch series for upstairs and out of curiosity connected the PC to it.

The same games that previously had stutter/not 60fps are now suddenly silky smooth. Take the PC downstairs and connect to the C8 and the same silky smooth scenes upstairs are now jerky.

It’s most odd. Would welcome any advice from folks on how to sort it downstairs. I assume it’s something to do with refresh rates?

Your C8 OLED is not G-sync Compatible where as your new CX is so i assume that's the difference your feeling between the 2 . Also the c8 is 4k/60hz where as your CX is 4k/120hz G-sync although with v-sync on you shouldn't get any stuttering on C8 unless the gpu is at max utilization and cant actually hit 4K/60hz.

Might be down to your HDMI cable. If its a 1.4 cable it will only support 4K at 30hz.
HDMI 2.0 will do 4K 60hz and HDMI 2.1 will do higher although I can't remember the exact limit.

That was my first thought too, b it both were being run at 60hz so I don’t understand why there should be frame drops on one but not the other?

Indeed check the actual FPS numbers as the VRR on the CX could be masking any sub 60 drops and RDR2 is pretty demanding!

Variable Refresh Rate - G sync compatible in this case allowing the display refresh to match frame rate

As said in post #2 - the CX has Gsync, the C8 does not. End of story, it's really not complicated. Don't mean to sound churlish but take a few minutes to actually read about the expensive tech you buy.

That’s not churlish but it is rude and presumptuous.

I am well aware of the g sync technology, and have a pc monitor that is g sync however I was surprised to see it being implemented in this way.

Relax Mr Pacey.

If you actually want some help and advice I could oblige as I also have a C8 and know a lot about all this malarky. Just grow a thicker skin first....

Ah yes! That age old gaslighting technique to justify unnecessary rudeness - ‘get a thicker skin.’

I appreciate the offer of help but I think I understand the issue now.

it started with the C9 and is a very lovely feature on LG OLEDs since what makes them standout TVs for gaming. If you ever upgrade the RTX 3xxx series all have hdmi 2.1 along with your CX. It means you can enable 4K up to 120hz, while having all the goodies like HDR 10bit and g-sync enabled.

it can be jarring indeed when going back and forth from having gsync / VRR enabled vs not having it enabled / on the tv. Becomes very apparent when you lose it and dip under 60.

Thank you. I’ve never experienced G Sync actually smoothing out frame rate drops - o always understood as stopping screen tearing with refresh rates so it was a lovely surprise! It now makes my downstairs tv look outdated....!

The CX has gsync which makes the game "feel" smoother even when framerate drops under the refresh rate. Gsync on TVs does have a floor of 40fps so if the game goes under 40fps you will feel stutters but as long as it's above 40fps gsync will keep it feeling very smooth
