odd issue with new system

had my new system up and running for around two months.

2500k asrock 4 board x-fi sound card 6870 graphics..

everything fine for two months. now in the last week i have lost sound on mp3,s and video on all players but still have sound when viewing youtube etc.

havent done anything different. still the same in safe mode etc..

any idea. media player wont play. vlc plays but no sound. tried reinstalling vlc also.

If you're using Windows 7, click on the sound icon in the taskbar and click 'Mixer' and see if any of the programs are muted. You need to do this while playing something in VLC/Media player. Might be worth reinstall/update sound drivers too.

should vlc show up as a separate item.
i get device - speakers
applications - system sounds and firefox

no vlc... will try updating drivers

thanks mate. problem was the updated drivers.. went back to older drivers and all is working again. it had updated drivers without me knowing..

thanks i have sounds again.

Looks like Windows update decided you needed newer drivers and installed them for you
