Odd letters in the post from Jefferson Hobbs...

Morning everyone,

The missus has recently received 3 letters from a company called Jefferson Hobbs, asking her to contact them regarding a legal matter:

"We would be greateful if you would contact this office at your earliest opportunity as we haved important legal information that we need to discuss with you. The information concerns a personal issue which may also involve your home."

There is a reference number and a freephone number to call on the letter. The letters were sent to our old address which we moved from a year ago. We also don't have a "home", we rent.

I've checked out Jefferson Hobbs at Companies House and they appear to be a valid company registered 3/4 years ago, but their accounts are showing as overdue.

Has anyone ever dealt with this company before and can confirm that they are for real? I don't want her phoning them and handing over all sorts of details without knowing who they are and what they are about.

It could be from a Debt collection agency. They sometimes employ tactics like this is order to get in contact with the person who owes the money.
 
Is that all the letter says? It seems a little bit suspicious to me and from the quoted passage contains no specifics just a general wording to make you feel uneasy. If you do phone up then I would be very guarded about the information that you pass on.
 
as said above - they've not been specific with details in the letter therefore DO NOT give bank details, personal details, passwords etc over the phone or in a letter.
 
i have dealt with debt collection agencies before, and they ALWAYS employ scare-tactics like this to try and get you to ring and pay immediately.

ring them and find out what they want.

Spoke to my friend who is an insolvency practitioner, she said the it is about you or the Mrs ever having an IVA / Bankruptcy as they will want to talk to you about ending it early using equity from your house / owned property. Just ring them and ask them to stop contacting you, unless you have to pay for the call.

Thanks for the effort Origin. The other half has an IVA so that'll be what it's about.

It's a freephone number so I'll get her to phone them and request they stop bugging us.
