Odd Noise ! - Ideas?

Recently completed my first loop - based on XSPC RS360 with a gpu block.

Having set up decided to increase the cpu o'clock from 4.4 to 4.5.

Did not touch motherboard settings - I leave it to the asus Z77 saber to sort voltage except that I fix the ram volts @1.5 and use a little negative offset.

I did run IBT (standard freeze test 5 x) a good few times after finishing the installation and after I upped the clock - no issue or odd noises!

A few days ago decided to give IBT a run again just to see how temps were doing and that's when the noise started - nearest thing I can suggest it sounded like was coil whine - it only came on when the cpu was under load and I had not heard it before!!

A quick bit of rock and roll of the case and a re-boot or two later all appeared in order :)

Today decided to give it a run again and the noise was back ! Also, gave it a go 3/4 times and upon at least 2 occasions it failed the test!

Thought it might by caused by air in the system, so rocked a bit and ran again - this time not only did it fail , it BSOD'd.:(

Re-booted and all worked ok , although I decided to leave it for a bit and rock and roll a bit more before giving it a go again.

That was about 1.00pm today - tried again just now - no noise and passed :)

Still a bit concerned ref the noise - surely you cannot get coil whine with watercooling and if it wasn't that what was it?

I'm thinking that it might be an idea to knock a bit of the offset off - good idea?

Thought appreciated; as always :)

n.b. i2700k running under 1.3v

could be the pump causing coil whine in the psu/gpu/mb ect?

test with turning off c1e or intel speedstep in the bios and see if noise stops

Could do ... but the noise is not constant it is only when it's under full load that it starts.

And just gave it a quick burst and it's not making the noise - running smooth it seems.

Possible that it was air somehow ?

Did seem to start after moving the case . Stop , after rocking /rolling & re-starting. AND , if memory serves me well, the current problem started after I moved (i.e. unplugged, lifted from floor to desktop etc) the damn thing and the 'cure' , again was rocking/rolling and re-starting.

BTW - have not had any problems except with IBT. Games etc 'normal'

Strange

Obvious check, is the res level high enough ? Noises from pumps happen when air gets into them.

Chances are you have it correct, but worth the shout out.

Coil whine is most likely to be the PSU I'd have thought?

Unlikely to be anything water cooling related, other than the fact that due to your loop you have both a little more load (the pump) and a higher overclock so maybe that's just pushing your power supply that little bit too far?

If the psu is struggling/ right at the top of its load it might be giving slightly unstable voltage/ output hence instability and BSOD?

Air in loop can create some funny noises, air in pump particularly, but wouldn't have said they sound like coil whine?

What is your PSU and spec etc?

Have you had the side off your case and popped your pump outside the chassis to see where the whine is coming from, be it psu, gpu, rad fans, pump?

Tried Heaven benchmark - no noise/problems. The res is full - not droipped at all since end of first fill/bleed and top up.

It does seem to be intermittent i.e. tried it yesterday, no noise and no fail and today a bit of extra noise but no fail.

Had not thought of psu - it is an Antec 650 Truepower.

I would have thought it would have coped but ....

Overclocked i2700K but volts do not exceed 1.3 and watts (per core temp) do not go above 120 and I cannot believe that it will be taxing it too hard when it's only running the one 7950 (Asus @ standard core of 900) which is just ticking over when I'm running IBT + 3 ssd's+ tv card + asus dx sound.AND the new pump

Had not thought of taking side of case off - will certainly give that a go tomorrow and see if I can isolate where - psu etc the noise is emanating from.

As always , useful suggestions being made - My thanks :)

Nothing like being reminded that one really is/can be a fool !!!

The 'odd noise' turned out to be the small 40mm fans that cool the motherboard vrm and chipset on an Asus Z77 Sabertooth motherboard, ramping up when IBT running.

Such overheating may well also explain why it was failing IBT. (?)

I would explain that I have been running the board and cpu for some months with the cpu clocked @4.4 without issue BUT in a Nzxt Phantom case - lots of fans ! including the side 200mm and the 2 fans on the Asus 7950 Top blowing air down towards those small fans.

HOWEVER I decided to upgrade to a Corsair 800D case and to watercool both cpu and gpu so I now have very few fans and none blow towards the small board fans so I believe that with the current heat I've managed to decrease the temps on both cpu and gpu BUT have increased the temp of the vrm's and chipset ; causing instability when under load/heat :(

Have decided to buy two of the 40mm Noiseblocker Pro 40mm fans , which I hope will fit, as they do read to be both good with air and noise.

Anyone got any better ideas?

Hakanase - Give yourself a pat on the back :) - Good call!

Cheers dude, I'm just happy you found out where the problem was and can fix it.
It helps me out as I know what to look out for when I get my new rig up and running, must remember to keep some airflow on mobo.
Hope it works out for your build mate
