Odd onboard video problem

I've got a cheap Gigabyte board (GA-73PVM-S2) with on board graphics.
It's not the most stylish, but it perfectly fine for it's use and work great with a Q6600 and 4Gb RAM under W7x64.

The onboard graphics has a VGA and a DVI-I connector and the Gigabyte litrature states it's "Dual View" so it's not a one or the other job.

I have purchased a matching 17" monitor to go with the existing one and I plugged it into the DVI-I via a DVI->VGA adaptor.

When I goto the settings, it recognises the second monitor and offers clone or extend mode, but selecting either and the 2nd monitor fails to wake up (orange light stays on). If I power cycle the monitor it goes green before displaying "No input signal" before going orange again.

I swapped the monitors around - same problem on the one in the DVI port.
I swapped the adaptor (One I know works from another machine) still no joy.

Tried reverting back to the MS built in driver (it's an Nvidia chipset running latest Nvidia drivers) - same outcome.

It was running 64Mb shared memory - tried upping to 128Mb and 256Mb - still the same.

Any thoughts?
