Odd original Xbox issue

Right I got myself an Xbox not long back for some games there weren't BC on the 360, mainly Hitman 2. The issue I'm having is that the this game maps sneak and crouch to the left trigger. You pull lightly for sneak and fully for crouch. It appeas that my console isn't registering the first 50% of the trigger so it goes straight to crouch. I've have tested this in a driving game too and sure enough I get nothing for the first 50% then bam full brakes pretty much.
I have tried 3 different pads now in all the controller ports. I'm guessing that the console is just faulty. Gutted as I've lost my receipt.

Seems like a wierd fault for the XBOX to have. What are the pads like in the other ports?

my first xbox had a problem like that, for some reaosn every pad i would put in port one seemed to register that i was presisng right on the stick slightly, it was fine for most games but in something like jedi starfighter it kept making my ship roll and made playing the game really annoying

i never found the cause or a way to fix it tho

Was there not something you could do that would reset/calibrate the pads on startup?
