Hi chappies,
Been having some problems with my car lately. 2.0 ltr Zetech 04 focus.

Idle seems a tad low (like 650rpm ish). And initially power from 1k to 2k was lumpy (misfire?) and the car felt sluggish, this rectified itself after 2k revs.

I took it back to the dealer as it was in warranty, he said one of the sparks wasn't firing properly and replaced them all. Problem solved.

Now the problem is back, but it's all the way through the revs now. Today I disconnected the maf, which rectified the problem though the car was less smooth. After that I took the piping from the back of the maf to the engine off and had clean inside the maf. Also unplugged and pushed back in the HT leads. Car seems better now.

Could the MAF or HT leads have caused this? If it returns what's my next port of call.

I also undid the airbox to try and get at the filter, but the rear-centremost bolt wouldn't undo. On closer inspection the nut attached to the housing has come free, and no matter WHAT i did I couldn't secure it to undo it. It's a pig to get at, I got a good set of pliers to it and tried to undo it but to no avail. Any ideas how to get the ****er off without massacaring / replacing the airbox?

ALSO. when idling the lights dim significantly and sometimes the engine struggles, it's stalled on several occassions because of this. Also when I turn on heated windscreen, lights dim signficantly. When the car idles the lights interior/exterior are very dim, and the fans slow on the AC. Giving it some revs rectifies this. Is this normal?

The lumpy / sluggish problem during all through the revs might of been that one of the HT leads might of not been pushed in properly. This happened with my Fiesta when I replaced the plugs on mine & when I came to start the car up for the first time after changing them the car started and sounded very slugglish and also when trying to accelerate off. The first thing I checked was the leads and the 3rd lead was not fully pushed in properly, second start attempt and the car sounded normal again. The light dimming problem with the heated screen is more than likely an electical fault, possibly one of the earth's maybe as something is drawing in too much electricity.

Ahh cheers lads :)

I'll recheck the leads tomorrow and see how the car drives.

As to earth, where do I start looking then? Is this going to be an absolute **** to track down?

Strange

Problem is back. Further wiggling / sorting of the HT leads will reduce / remove the problem for a while, but it gets progressively worse again...

Is it a a fault lead/leads that's causing the problem? Or could my earth problem be causing this?

Can you have error codes read anywhere? It'll tell you if there is a misfire on one of the plugs. You could then reverse the order of the HT leads and test again. See if the fault moves to the different plug?

Great idea. I'll see what I can do.

UPDATE

Not had it checked over at the garage yet, but the problem has gotten progressively worse. And now the yellow engine warning light in the bottom left flashed on an off for several seconds after a particularly bad judder.

Ideas?

Get it into the garage,

My GF's Fiesta MK4 has a simular problem and when the garage hooked the ECU to their computer it threw up that the lambda sensor was knackered and needs replacing, though on her Fiesta MK4 she has not got an engine management light so nothing showed on the dash but I know that if the lambda is knackered or on its way out it can cause the engine light to show.

For those with a similiar issue, problem was fixed with a new set of HT leads, woo!

Cost me £25 for a set of Bosch ones, didn't bother with OEM. (Oh noes!!! Car will blow up!!1one :p)

it could be the coil pack.. that was what went wrong on my car.. apparently its quite common on focus-s
