Odd problem with Lightroom 5.3

I took a couple of photos yesterday, and added them to an existing folder by synchronising in the Library tab. However, when navigating to the folder I wanted I realised that most of my entire folder list under the relevant hard drive letter has completely disappeared!

I'm left with my three most recent folders and all the others (some 170 or so) have vanished. Nothing else has changed - the photos are still on the hard drive as normal, I haven't changed the location of the photos or any other settings in Lightroom, the catalogue is still the same and is sufficiently large to suggest that it still contains all the previews and other actions. Indeed, on the Library tab if I look at the Catalog option then I can see all the photos there, in one big group. But the folders seem to have mostly vanished, leaving me perplexed.

Does anyone have any bright ideas?

I'm guessing here.
Is "Show Photos in Subfolders" ticked, in the "Library" tab and is "All Photographs" showing just above the thumbnails at the bottom of the screen ?
