A mates pc has started to run realllly slow for no reason, now I built it and installed the software 2 months ago, its got zonealarm, avg free spyware blaster on it. Its a celeron 2.4ghz 768mb ram, this 'setup' I use has never failed in regards to virus's etc, I run it on my system, works fine.

Basically it boots but takes ages to do anything, iv ran windows task manager and svchost is running 100% cpu most of the time - now i know its this that's causing the problems, but I have no idea as to why its eating cpu time, iv ended its process then the desktops reverts to 'performance mode' i.e. blue task bar to grey one - why has it randomly started doing this ? any ideas?

Find the PID of the svchost which is taking up all the CPU time, then "tasklist /svc" in command prompt and it will show you what that svchost is doing.

How do I find the PID of it ? iv got thats tasklist up just a list of whats running with svchost listed many times, sorry im noob :D

Iv watched it, it appears to run 100% cpu for the 1st 10 mins or so then stops, computers still slow for some reason but its 'idling' properly after 10 mins

The pid will be on the Processes tab of task manager, you will probably have to add the PID column though.

its PID svchost 1024

audioserv, bits, browser, cyrptsrv, dhcp, dmserver, ersvc, eventsystem, fast user switch, helpsvc, imanserver, lanmanworkstation, netman, nla, rasman, scheduale, sec logon, sens, shared access, shell hw detection, srservice, tapi serv, themes, trkwks, w32time, winmgmt, wscsvc, waauserv, wzcsvc

So could be anything then ! :(

Worm/virus/trojan
Sounds like it could be a hidden virus/trojan

Had you tried Spybot? Dowload all spybot updates and immunise first and a scan in safemode is needed to sort out some spyware.

I find SpywareBlaster doesn't stop everything, neither does spybot but it will at least scan and often finds stuff missed by an antivirus.

AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 is very good, use to be Ewido and does find a lot of spyware. They do a 30 day free trial. :D

Nothing is 100% :)

I had exactly the same issue - turned out to be the Telephony service causing it to leak CPU power.

Try disabling that then rebooting :)

I've started to see this problem a lot in the last few months, almost always revolving around Windows update and a PC checking for updates in the background. Process Explorer will show you which service is causing the problem. This patch may fix it, but it hasn't always on the PC's I've seen the problems on. If it is Windows update, this may help.

ive had a 50% load with my dual core for some reason which in theory must be the same as your problem (yours being single core so will show 100% load)

i dont know what it is, ive got automatic updates turned on but setup to alert me that there are new updtaes ready to download, all updates have been downloaded and installed.

i have avg 7.5, ccleaner, ad-adware and spybot s&d, i find the usual spyware and adware but no virus's or whatever. its been happening for the past 2 months.

when i format and install windows its fine but when i start downloading updates, then it seems to be the problem.
