Odd problem

Looking at a pc here for a colleague that he recently installed a new mobo.

We had it working here, but as soon as he took it home, it wouldn't switch on. Brought it back in here yesterday, I couldn't get it to switch on, changed PSU and it fired up. Switched back to his PSU and still worked. I then left it off for 30mins, and it wouldn't switch back on or with the spare again. I then went to remove the PSU and fit the second one, only to find the PSU smoking.

I reconnected the spare one, it won't start up with that and was making a humming noise. I'm waiting for the PSU to be tested before I try another and blow that as well.

Anybody got any ideas as to why this maybe happening? I've taken the mobo out of the case with nothing on it but the CPU and still no life.

Smoking PSU does not sound good. Do you have specs available (all parts)?

Asrock p4i65g mobo, Celeron 2.4 (I think). Surely it should fire up with just CPU on?

I think this second PSU might be dead, but don't want to put another in until I find out what's causing them to go.

Just tested PSU on another old server I have here. It powers the board and case fans, but CPU fan and northbridge fan don't spin. The supply does give a strange noise though when connected to the new board and still doesn't power it.

Just found the CPU to be a Celeron 2.5 400MHz which the board supports.

I've connected a fan to the board, but would it fire up without the CPU in?
