odd problem

Hi.

Well making this website for an assignment at college and the buttons on the left which is jsut 1 big image have white around then, they are a GIF image, any idea how to get rid of this white mess from around them?

set the transparency using photoshop etc.

Save them as PNGs, not GIFs; the GIF format only supports a 1-bit alpha channel (i.e. transparent or opaque), whereas the PNG format supports an 8-bit alpha channel (giving 256 levels of transparency).
