Odd question - shared work folder?

I want to set my laptop up to dual boot Windows XP and Debian Linux. Simple enough question but I fear the answer is no; is it possible to have a FAH installation on both OSs and have them share the same work folder (to avoid multople ongoing WUs) so I don't feel obliged to balance my usage of each OS?

Thanks, null :)

Why not just try it :D

I would imagine the Linux clients crunch the WUs just the same as I wouldn't have thought stanford would waste time and energy re-writing WUs just for Linux.

I'm just wondering if, however, the clients would have a problem with a WU that has been partially worked on by a different client/OS.

rich will know for sure though!

No can do I'm afraid. Fairly sure the Windows and Linux clients store partially-folded units in different formats. :(

D'oh!

I was also wondering about how the clients would get along using the same folder since there are config files and other gubbins that might cause aggro!

Nice idea though.

And with Wine? I'm pretty confident this would work in theory, just last time I tried it with Wine I got stuck configuring Wine to allow FAH to run on startup. And my understanding was that if I did get it working, it would prevent me from using Wine for anything else (don't know if I will need/want it yet but would be nice to have it available).

If someone could give a second opinion on the chances I might be tempted to give it a go. Might take me a while to figure out how though, I'm still quite the Linux noob really :o

Thanks, null :)

I've had problems before just getting two Windows installs to work on the same WUs without restarting progress each time :o

though that was some time ago and a previous version of the client I'm sure so you never know - I think you'll be very lucky though :(

I recently got that working when I was dual booting Vista Beta 2 and XP. I left the FAH folders on the XP partition and just re-ran the consoles with configonly to register the services in Vista. Worked flawlessly. I seem to have subconciously been ignoring everything said in this thread, because I'm going to give it a go with Wine when I get around to sorting the laptop out (might be a while yet) :o Sorry for being stubborn, will let you all know how I get on (probably give up knowing me) :)

well it'll either work - or it won't :p

though if I were you I wouldn't risk a large WU (chance would be a fine thing) which has had a lot of time spent on it already

oh and you may aswell back-up the whole folder on your machine just incase

I have a machie here (my one and only folder) that has 4 installations or windows on it, they all share the same F@H folder and work queues. I'm not aware of any issues with re startig the work units.

I just create the services manually for the other OSs where it wasn't installed natively

they are all windows installs so this doesn't really help you wityh your question :D
