Sound works ok but if i play a vid clip in Firefox e.g. youtube the sound elseware stops (e.g. VLC will play a movie but no sound)

if i turn Firefox off the VLC sound works again

any ideas how to fix this?

thanks

There was a problem of sound not working properly in Firefox in Edgy, but I think that got fixed in Feisty. Is it a fresh install? What's your sound hardware?

hi gumbald

no its not a frsh install - online upgrade from edgy (through beta)

sound is on autodetect - its an onboard nvidia CK804 chip

as a matter of interest i get start up sounds at the login screen (the drun roll) but i don't get the start up sounds after you log in

over the past few months i have installed all sorts of sound stuff through synaptic (trying to get some game to work i think) - which i think is when the system sound thing started

i assume i have some sort of driver conflict - but i don't know how to identify what the problem is

many thanks

Hmm, sounds very specific then, might get some better help on Ubuntu forums from someone who's a sound expert :)

Sounds like alsa is not configured correctly. In linux you need to make sure your apps are using the alsa sound server which will mix audio. Otherwise only one app can use the sound card at a time.

I did consider that, but it seems a strange problem still. Is there a simple way of resetting alsa to be the default?

thanks for the input

i have had a play around in sound preferences which lists 5 options - 2 nvidia/ESD/Alsa/OSS

only OSS gives any sound

if i selct ALSA i get this message:
audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink profile=music: Could not open resource for writing.

thanks

hi again

sound quality seems to have suffered - it gets a bit distorted/crackly at times - any ideas what causes this and how to fix?

thanks
