Odd temperature reading...

Hiya,

I have a Q9300 currently running at stock speed (fsb 333mhz, 2.5ghz)...

My mobo is an asus p5q3 deluxe with an artic cooler pro.

I have been having lots of problems lately with BSODs after I installed 2 more GB of RAM. After turning off my overclock the BSODs stopped but the system kept hanging after a couple of hours and would just do the same on restart.

I took a RAM stick out (to check for bad RAM) and got several temp sensing programs in the progress.

Each program gives the same readings:

cpu temp 18 C

core 0: 33 C

core 1: 32 C

core 2: 57 C

core 3: 29

It seems that core 2 (or s that really core 3???) is very hot compared to the others... even on ZERO load.

I'm thinking I might not have the heatsink on correctly...? (AS IN MAYBE TOO MUCH THERMAL PASTE? OR BADLY APPLIED?)

Any ideas?

Can't help with that, but i think u would see higher tems on another core as well, cause it wouldn't make contact with another one...

Problems with the extra ram, have u tryed increasing the volts to the northbridge and the ram ?

Is the difference in temps the same under load? If so then I'd RMA that chip.

lol

It was given to me so I can't RMA it... however I think that maybe the temp sensors are 'stuck' as Real Temp shows a zero on core 1 & 2 sensor test...

But...

Something is wrong and I cant twig what. I have re-applied the thermal paste and there is no difference in temperature.

I have used memtest on the RAM and it shows no errors.

Vista 64 is completely up to date, as are my video drivers...

The system was completely stable on a 3.5ghz overclock with 2gb of RAM.

But it wont overclock at all on 4gb (constant BSODs). Ram is 4 x 1gb ocz gold 10666 @ 1333mhz.

I want to keep the 4gb as it lets me run games on ultra setting with a good framerate (the extra RAM helps more than the overclock).

ffs I don't know anymore, HELP!!!

Did you give the northbridge voltage a good kick to boost it for running 4 sticks?

I would set PLL to 1.52v, FSB Term to 1.12v and Northbridge to 1.22v if running at stock and four sticks of memory.

Also be sure to set the correct DRAM voltage for your memory.
