So on a betting website it says if you make a qualifying bet they'll match it with a free bet. But what does the qualifying thing mean?

"Any bets placed containing selections at odds of less than 1/2 do not count as qualifying bets."

No one I've asked seems to know which way it goes. Does it mean if you bet on something that's 1/50 it won't count, but something that was 7/1 would could? Or is it the other way round? :confused:

the right hand number is how much you got to bet for you to win the amount on the left, so 1/50 means you're risking £50 just for the sake of £1 (if you win you get your £50 back on top of the £1 win), pretty much a sure thing in that case.
50/1 means you're getting 50x your money back, so in that case it would seem an unlikey outcome

woo. I actually work at coral :D

urm yes odds.

1 / 50, is saying heres my £50, i am betting this £50 on x will happen if it DOES happen i win £1 and my £50 stake i get back.

x / y :

x - Return (i think) the multiplier as i like to think of it from your stake.
y - stake, normally if you win the bet you get it back if you lose you dont.

Your stake does not have to match the odds, like 25 / 1, you must put a pound on its a fraction therefore can be applied to any amount of money for example:

4 / 1 odds : 25p bet therefore if it wins you WIN £1 and recieve your 25p stake back returning a total of £1.25 for a 25p bet.

Hope this helps if anyone was wondering, could also answer any general betting questions if you had any.

Heads and tails is evens, 50/50, there is a 50% chance that the coin will land heads, 50% it will be tails (Yes, I know there is a slim chance it could land on it's edge, or get eaten by a dog but for simplicity this is evens)

Evens = 50% chance of it happening.

Odds against means that it is less than 50% chance it will happen (Elvis found on moon, Wimborne and Dorset Ladies beat Man U). This will be odds where the left hand number is bigger than the right hand

11/8, 2/1, 10/1 etc.

Odds on means that it is more than 50% likely to happen (New Zealand beat England, Ronnie O'Sullivan win the snooker Premier League). This will be odds where the right hand number is bigger than the left.

1/2, 10/11, 1/50 etc.

Bookies have that rule so that there is less than a 50% chance of your free bet winning. The free bet is more than likely to return back to them.

Make your life a whole lot easier by using decimals. Much more spreadsheet friendly.

Evens = 1/1 = 2.0

So if you bet £10 at 2.0 --> 2.0 * £10 = £20 --> ( odds * stake = return)

Return includes your stake, so Profit = £20 - £10 = £10 ( return - stake )

p.s. Read the small print carefully!
