Odyssey G9 For Gaming Quality?

Hi,

I am currently gaming on a 28" 16:9 4k panel. I am considering switching to a G9 Odyssey for the increased amount of desktop space, immersion in games, G-Sync, and increased refresh rate. I do however have a concern regarding stepping down from 3840 to 2160 resolution to 5120 x 1440.

Now between the two resolutions their is only approximately 10% in terms of pixel count, 8 million pixels at 4k vs approx 7 million at the ultra wide resolution, but the pixels per inch relative to screensize are substantially lower on the samsung ultrawide opposed to my current setup. 108ppi vs 156ppi.

Will the decrease in resolution and pixel density be noticeable? I do not want to end up with picture quality that is substantially worse than my existing 4K monitor.
Also how is this monitor in general for gaming?

Thanks

It's a bit of a strange question. Of course there is a PPI step down, but it's just that, a PPI stepdown. PPI does not equate to picture quality.
If PPI is your primary concern, then yes don't do it. All the other reasons you gave are good reasons to get a G9.

However, if you gave some context of your current monitor (i.e. What is it??) then you might get some more focussed advice.

The question was based primarily around the fact that it will be used for gaming, and I do not want to significantly degrade the picture quality. Regarding your question on my current monitor, it is a Samsung UE28590D 4K (60HZ, 4K, No HDR)

Understood, but the point I'm making is that resolution is just resolution. Picture quality is a combination of contrast, brightness, colour, low light performance, backlight zones, resolution, refresh rates, pixel response times, uniformity etc. etc. etc.
And when you say gaming, what sort of games? And in what lighting conditions?
It's up to you, but the more information you put in a question the better quality of reply you'll get, on any forum.

From your current monitor, I would say that the G9 is a massive upgrade in pretty much every conceivable way. It's possible you still might get a bit more blur in dark shooters (due to overshoot errors/slower transition times) but even if you do, I think you'll be absolutey blown away by a G9.
I came from a 24" 1080p TN and the resolution is the least of the upgrades.
Look at the RTINGS comparison tool : https://www.rtings.com/monitor/tool...odyssey-g9/527/14363?usage=9091&threshold=0.1

I love my Odyssey G9, it's been pretty much perfect since that last firmware update.

Completely wasting it now of course I've discovered mining, so i haven't played a game in 5 weeks! Just doing work now with the onboard gfx instead of enjoying my 3090...

Just as well I've got a pile of shame that would put any pile of shame to, er, shame - and that's only counting games that will run fine with Intel UHD 630 gfx, never mind getting into the stuff I've still to play on the kids consoles!

I can notice the difference in sharpness just between my 34" 3440x1440 & my 35" 3440x1440 monitors

What differences do you notice between the 34” and 35” 3440x1440 ultra wides? I have a 34” that I need to replace due to a fault and have noticed a few of the 35” versions at the same 3440x1440 res. Thanks.

The 35" Doesn't look quite as sharp as the 34" but am not sure how much this is to do with the pixel dot pitch being bigger on the 35" or how much it due to going from an IPS panel to a VA panel

Then again my viewing distance is only about 18 inches away from my 35" UW :D:D:D

I would love to get a G9, but its just too curved for me! If it was a 1800R instead of the 1000R I would definitely get it
