OEM cards? Something to avoid?

I've been browsing prices for various cards as I am going to upgrade at some point. I have come across OEM software.. but not hardware.

*Don't link to competitors please*

What does it mean when OEM is applied to cards like this? Are we looking at specs not being as high... because that seems too cheap for a card like that?

my last pc about 4-5 years ago i bought from ocuk

paid 1k for it , it had a oem 8800gtx in it :(

basically means non branded i guess

It doesn't mean it's non-branded, it'll mean that it's generally made for computer assemblers so doesn't come with the fancy packaging that a retail card might come with.

Apologies I didn't realize links were forbidden or they were a competitor. Thanks for removing it for me though.

Anyway thanks everyone, so seems like they are generally just found in pre built computers.. think I'm going to snap one up at those prices, fancy packaging is not something I will miss :D

I had a Dell xps POS with an oem 8800gt (single slot with nvidia logo design on it).

This brings back memories

I used to have a Dell xps POS within the space of a few weeks both 8800gt cards and 2 of the 3 hard drives failed. Fortunately Dell had to replace them.

It did me a favour though, it made me realise that it was cheaper, more reliable and more fun to build my own.

the psu on mine sparked out and destroyed all but the hdds

On the going tangent, I had a XPS gen 5, I changed the GPU as it had a 6 pin available in the case, it would not run the new card without pulling two sticks of ram and a pci card. (Nvidia power monitor told me so etc).

For me OEM (Dell) for sure is so low spec its best avoided! Buy a standard machine to use as is, do not expect it to be upgradable. Back in 2005 the mobos may take standard components but the ability of other components sure could not!
