Still in the middle of a battle with myself over which processor to go for. Am i likely to get a better overclocking chip if i bought an OEM or retail version?

this will be the last time I change the cpu in my current system which I'll probably then sell on as a whole unit when I make a move to i7 or whatever the next intel processor is towards the end of the year.

I'm going to go for an E8xxx, not sure which one yet though but it will be in E0 stepping either way.

The reason I ask about OEM or retail is that I'm sure I heard someone saying that OEM chips were usually bad overclockers as you'd likely be unable to overclock them anyway in something like a Dell system. Guess theres no truth to this?

with dell systems the MB is usually the limiting factor for an overclock.

with regards to resale value, i would say if you sell within 1 year get OEM, but if within 3 years, get retail.

my cpu choice would be the e8400

Thanks for the reply. Was leaning towards the 8400 tbh. Cant really justify the extra money for the 8600 especially now that they're all E0.

Speaking of warranty, does anyone know if I were to buy a processor that was "used" but still in sealed packaging, would I have an intel warranty?
