I've read through the sticky but just after a bit of clarification. I've bought all the parts for a media pc but thought I would use Linux instead of Windows, not a good idea for someone who has no idea what they are doing. So if I wanted to put a copy of Vista on the machine instead am I still okay with buying the OEM version or do I have to buy retail?

You can buy the OEM but it's only licensed to that hardware, so future upgrades my require re-activiation. You'll have weigh up how much upgrading you'll be doing.
 
Pretty much zero, since all it will be doing is acting a media centre there will be no need to upgrade, except for possibly extra storage at some point.
