Is there any real advantage in choosing the retail version over the OEM version? I'll be using watercooling so the hsf won't be needed.

Apart from getting a heatsink with Retail, nothing really, but I have heard some people say that Retails overclock better

retail vs oem

I think a 3 year warranty over a 1 year also has it's advantages to.

I re-use my processors into other machines so imo its worth having a retail version

I've never had a CPU fail on its own - its usally fan's clogged up with dust making it overheat, motherboards/PSU's dying and taking the CPU with it (very rarely that is too!).

I've just bought an OEM E6400 here's hoping I don't have any problems ;)

edit: if you handle the CPU properly and always do it you have nothing to fear.
