Question: is oem W7 pro able to format and create partitions etc on a new blank SSD or HDD?

I seem to recall that oem XP pro could not format and partition a brand new HDD and only a retail version was able to do this.

I kind of need to know before I remove my old computer from its case and install my shiny new bits. If the answer to the above is no, then I'll have to use my existing XP os to format and partition both my new SSD and HDD before I assemble my new machine.

Hmm. Odd then - I know with the drive I had at the time my oem XP pro refused to format or set the partition on a brand new oem HDD.
I had to take the drive and put it in another computer and format with ntfs. After that windows installation was fine.
Maybe something is different but I know for sure that at the time it completely failed to work for me (and I'm not discounting user error here) - perhaps this was something to do with how the HDD came from the manufacturer?

However, I'll take you guys word for it that I will have no trouble installing W7 64 bit pro on my shiny new SSD (and the rest of my new pc when it arrives from OcUK).
