My flat mates PC is basically full of rubbish after 3 years of use and he wants to start from fresh. The only problem is his PC is from a big manufacturer of PCs that OCUK did (or used to) sell monitors from [not sure if i can say who??]. Well anyway, would it work for me to use my winXP oem disc to reinstall windows on his PC using his OEM key? Or would he need the manufacturers restore disc?

It really depends what machine he has. Dell had OEM keys pooled to just them for a time, how long I'm not sure. Try it, if it doesn't work, talk to Dell and key a disc.

If the key is accepted at install (which it should be if you use an OEM disc) then chances are it won't activate, in which case a quick call to MS will solve everything. Dell will also probably ship you the CDs out if you call them and ask (assuming that it's a Dell PC).

Thanks all. I`ll give this a whirl next week after exams. I`ll just do it, if it does accept i`ll call dell, and if it does and doesnt activate ill call ms.

Luckily for my flatmate i have a spare 260 gb for him to backup on too. Though ive got to get the gigabit network working first as wireless won't cut it :D
