I'm going to Amsterdam on Monday with my brother, sister and some of her friends. It's my sister's birthday and our parents have paid for us all to go (which I attempted to refuse, being 21 and earning...) and I imagine they're sending my brother and I just to make sure my sister (17) behaves!

Apart from the obvious coffee shops and red light district, can anyone who's been there give me some tips about good places to visit in the day, and then in the night? During the day my brother and I will be with my sister and her friends, then in the evening we'd like to know where's good for drinking and the like.

Cheers :)

Ask for some herbal smoke that affects you in certain ways, my advice on the first day would be see everything you wana see, then go to the zoo under the influence of hash thatll make everything more intresting but wont make you tired and lazy and make u wana just sit infront of a Tv. That has to be one of my fave things ever, in my top 10 life experiances.

The heineken(sp) factory is always a good laugh, also saying how you will be in the dam, try and visit one or two of the museums.

KaHn

OT but isn't that supposed to be 'seeing how'? Just trying to correct my metal block.

We should have an ocuk meet in Amsterdam and crash at the Dutch guy's place, sounds like a plan to you guys?

Oh yes indeedy :D :D

I fell in love with a 'lady of the night' last time I was at the dam. She was absolutely stunning (I mean there is stunning and there is stunning but she was STUNNING) and for a mere £27.50 she could have been all mine ;) :D

Oh, watch out when you're going down the stairs to the Grasshopper. Those things are steeper than a steep thing

Cue the Amsterdam expert ( going next month for the 11th time in 4 years )

re the sex museum , there are 2 , the one on Damrak is rubbish , yoy need the one in the red light district

nightlife , there are many bars in the RLD but these start dyring off by 11-12, the best area is the Leideseplein though AMS is not huge into clubbing style nightlife

touristy things are canal boat trips ( not very good ) , Anne Franks haus ( moving but not a lot to see ) and the main museums which are around the Vondel park area

we tend to find just wandering and exploring to be the best bet in the day

torture museum is enlightening :D

Stay OUT of the red light district, it's just tacky and crap. I was staying in a hostel in there and it gave me a really bad impression of Amsterdam. Once you're out of there, go towards the Rijkmuseum, it's on a huge open park with the Van Gogh Museum right next to it as well. Also you should try and get to Anne Frank's house, it's always really busy unless you get there first thing in the morning.

In terms of going out, head to Rembrandtplein for pubs and clubs, it's just a strip of loads of decent clubs. Also, if you get the chance, even during the day, go to 11 which is near the station. It's just a huge tower block that used to be the post office, but on the 11th floor there's an amazing pub/club/restaurant with views over the whole city.

Like I said, you'll get bored of the red light district within minutes unless you're a sex-starved geeza on a stag night, Amsterdam is a lot better than just sex, shmokes and pancakes

On the contrary, I found it fascinating. Aside from the obvious lure of numerous semi-naked women openly asking you to violate them in all manor of ways, the mere fact that such a place even exists and that you can freely wander around it is reason enough in itself.
