So I'm visiting friends in Germany over the weekend- will probs watch the match on the big screen in town. Anyone got any good ideas for banter? Will wear the flag maybe with "please not penalties" on the back. My general plan is to steer clear of the traditional "10 German bombers"-singing stereotype.

Wear a t-shirt with a picture of Dresden on it and the tagline, England - we'll flatten your defence. That should spark some banter :D

This world cup has turned out like ww2! The french surrendered early, the usa arrive last min and we are left to fight the germans :D

Lived with two Germans this year and they were pretty sound, if at most, one needed a haircut.

Even though they were younger than me they hated WWII, it still is a sore point over there and it goes further than the fact they lost. Even halfway quite a large proportion disagreed with it and it seems even 3 generations later they carry a lot of shame. By all means banter but don't bring it up it's not really funny to them.

The football rivalry is a funny one which most fans understand. I support Arsenal and for years have seen Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester UTD as my main rivals. Spurs, even though our 'traditional' rival, is more from their side than ours. Apparently the same applies with the England/Germany rivalry; they barely remember 1966. It's easy to forget when you win it twice afterwards, and get to another 3 finals. The best we've done since 1966 is the semis both in the Euros and the WC, both of which we were knocked out by guess who and by what method on their way to winning :p

So you spent sometime with Benny Hill loving geezer with a mullet who doesn't like to mention the war and whose football team can only win anything on penalties ?

What is your point exactly or is it we shouldn't offend their sensibilities ???

Yeah right :D

Ha, I guess for any situation the winner writes :p They take the war seriously, whereas we joke about it. They barely notice the 1966 WC, which is unsurprising (see above), and we take that seriously.

My point is don't go and be a typical English yob ass abroad. Slightly off topic it's refreshing to go through a major tournament without our fans doing something to get on the news. :p

Just like the english or german stereotype very few of us are actually like that ;)

BTW I worked in Germany for 4 years building warships for them , my grandad never forgave me :D

I know german for "excuse me,can you tell me the way to the hospital please" Unfortunately I can't remember how to write it,just how it's spoken. Oh,and I can't remember directions either:rolleyes:
