I'm off to LA next weekend for 10 days, staying in Santa Monica and have a car.

We're going to do some of the obvious stuff, probably visit Death Valley, and I appreciate LA isn't the most picturesque city, but any tips from a photographic point of view?

Also regarding buying gear, I might pick up an UWA lens- any decent shops in the LA area, or any to avoid?

Regarding bringing kit back, I assume it's just a case of not bringing the box?
Not really bothered about the warranty situation.

Looking forward to it, cheers!

LA itself is a bit of a hole however the Callifornia coast is really nice so if you have a car it's a really nice drive. You can go down to Venice Beach which is pretty wierd as most of the people there are drugged up to their eyeballs...

The first time I went to LA was on a drive from San Francisco to Las Vegas and that was an amazing. If you can find some extra time to do the drive to Vegas it would be fun ;)

Main thing is that you have a car, LA is horrendously spread out, be prepared to be stuck in allot of traffic.

Venice beach was alright, same with Griffith observatory.

i'd recommend checking out Getty Center, not usually a fan of that sort of thing but it was pretty impressive.

If you goto the main hollywood area, stay central, the main streets nice, got some good shops, the surround areas are a dump, saw 2 muggings in the space of 15 minutes

Had no problems bringing stuff back, just took labels off, folded the boxes..etc..

Have a good time!

LA
I'd definitely do the Disney Concert Hall and try and get some down town shots in the evening/blue hour featuring roads and overpasses.

Death Valley
The Race track, sand dunes, Zabriskie Point for morning/evening shots.
Devils Golf Course and the usual stuff along the road.

Yosemite NP if you've time :)

Drive highway 1 up to to San Francisco, check out the elephant seals, some of the coastal redwood state parks, beaches, point Lobos. From San francisco head inland to Lkae tahoe, then drive south on the 395 and visit Bhodie ghost town, lake mono and then the Yosemite East entrance. Back down to the 395 down Owens valley, stop off at places such as convict lake, mammoth, lone pines, Alabama hills and return to LA.

You must drive through big sur!! It's amazing and not far from LA . We stayed in Santa Barbara. LA is insane to drive in 8 lane highways can be nuts! Stay in the middle lane unless coming off is a good tip! The big sur drive towards San Francisco would start at a beach full of a few thousand seals and condors flying overhead. Look for Pfeiffer beach amazing place for photos and Malibu is stunning too! The warner studio tour is amazing getting to view lots of live sets but they make you put the camera away a lot :( . Just have fun and remember it's ok and legal to turn right on a red light unless is states otherwise ( a god send and fab idea that works so well ! ) oh and if you do drive big sur keep an eye out for Lucia lodge their burgers are amazing and offer a stunning view:)
